Capability Analysis: How is it made?

Step 1 Construct a histogram

It is important to make a histogram of the data in order to determine if it is normally distributed. A more precise method to evaluate whether the data can be considered normal would be to do a probability plot or the chi-squared test. It is not necessary to construct a histogram each time the capability of a system is determined. As long as the system remains stable and the data is known to be normally distributed, a histogram need not be made again.

For the histogram shown below, one can see the overall shape is relatively normal.
