Presenting:

JAN

Jan is a high energy person.  She eats often, never worries about her weight and is perpetually slim.   Perhaps "eats often" is a misnomer.  If Jan does not eat at regular intervals, her wonderful disposition goes bye bye.   We often plan our excursions around Jan's feeding times.  We know that every three hours we must stop to, "feed the beast".

Jan is also our role model for "how one should look on a bike tour".   Many bikers wear brightly colored outfits, but our Jan, actually has socks and earrings to match her jackets, jerseys, and pants.  We, the other Granny Gears, admire and comment, but never quite get it together ourselves.

Jan was employed as a Medical Technologist at Ohio State University for seventeen years.   She also served as Aquatics Director of the North Branch YMCA for five years.  About a  year ago, she decided to start her own business as a lawn and garden specialist.  She formed a partnership with Rob Aiken, a man who had similar business interests, and the new business was launched.  You can visit Jan's Web site to learn more about her new companyClick on:   Backyard Gardeners

Janes favorite activities are:

Biking                          Hiking                  Backpacking

Jan is a high energy person.  She enjoys biking, hiking, and backpacking.
I have had the good fortune to be invited to accompany her on some of these adventures.  We spent a week  backpacking on the Shenandoah Park portion of the Appalachian Trail in 1996 and in 1997, spent two weeks backpacking the Greenstone Ridge Trail on Isle Royale.  Isle Royale is a National Park, located  in Lake Superior.  We also had a great adventure last summer, when we spent two weeks touring the Loire Valley by bike.

Once upon a time, long before the Granny Gears were formed, Jan, Jane, and I along with twenty other people from Columbus, journeyed to Australia.  Once there, we joined 2500 other people from many countries.

Our purpose: to ride from Melbourne to Sidney on bicycles.  The three of us managed to complete and survive this trip.  We crossed the Snowy Mountains, endured days of rain and fog, shared mountain roads with huge logging trucks, camped and slept in wet, soggy gear, and logged 778 miles.    Although we barely knew each other at that time, we certainly earned each other's respect.

Jan has hiked the Inca Trail in Peru.  This is a difficult trail high in the Andes Mountains.  She is also an experienced scuba diver and caver.

Jan has two children and three grandchildren.   Her daughter lives in the Columbus area and is the mother of two little boys.  Her son lives in Massachusetts and has a little girl.  Jan is a devoted grandmother and often does baby sitting gigs for her grandsons.   Although she doesn't see her son's family as often, they keep in touch through email.

Jan is a very active in her church, Epworth United Methodist.   One of the activities in which she participates the Epworth Bell Choir.   She is also a long standing member of the Worthington Chorus.   This is a performing group and therefore, demands a lot of dedication.  Jan has served as Artistic Director of this group.  Jan is also a long standing member of the Westerville Bike Club.   This club sponsors many bike rides and weekend trips.   They are somewhat known for the fast pace they ride.
