What is this strange creature?
He is looking in a mirror trying to work out who, or what, he is.
I can tell him, he is a Bunyip, a mythical Australian animal.
Please sign my guest book
The Bunyip might not like being called a "mythical animal",as he was definately alive back in the Aboriginal Dream Time. This is the time before history when the land, its people, and animals, were made. In the dreaming the Bunyip was a fearsome animal that lived in the billabongs, and came out at night, to grab anyone who strayed away from the camp fire. He was  the stuff of nightmares and his call could be heard all over the land.
The Aboriginals have many interesting stories about Bunyips, here is one about eating  frogs              and all sorts of other nasties. Click on my little tree frog to                  read the story, but do not forget to come back!!
Wasn't that an interesting story. There are many other stories of the Dreaming to be found on the web, why don't you go and look later.
When Europeans came to Australia the stories about bunyips gradually changed. From being a creature to scare children , he became a helpful, lovable, sometimes sad animal He can be found in some of our most favourite childrens books. Most children of my generation grew up on a diet of "The magic Pudding",well worth reading if you can find a copy. It is by Norman Lindsay and the illustrations are wonderful. Of course Bill Bunyip is not really a bunyip at all, you will have to find the book to discover what he really is..
Here is a picture from my favourite Bunyip book, and it really is about Bunyips. It is called "The Bunyip of Berkley's Creek" written by JennyWagner and illustrated by Ron Brooks. It won theChildren's Book Council of Australia's Picture Book of theYear for 1974. It is a beautiful book if you can find a copy in your local library.
Here are some evil looking creatures, but take heart, they are not Bunyips. These horrible looking fellows are "Big Bad Banksia Men' they are the evil ones from another famous Australian set of children's books, by May Gibbs.
More about her and her Gum Nut Babies on another page.
If you would like to see a really beautiful site about Bunyips have a look at this.
