At about the same time as Beatrix Potter was introducing families to the animals of the English countryside, in Australia , an illustrator named May Gibbs was showing Australian children the secret world of the Bush Babies. Her first book about the babies was published in 1916,though they were seen on the cover of "Lone Hand" in 1914.
While writing her books about the bush babies, May Gibbs was also compiling a set of stories that she eventually published as "Tales of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie". In 1940 she combinedSnugglepot and Cuddlepie with "LittleRaggedBlossom" and "Little Obelia" into a book called "The Complete Adventures of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie". It was this book, that children of my age grew up with.
A photo of the Marri Gum that is supposed to be the tree where May Gibbs first saw the gum nuts. Look at the shape of the nuts and leaves, and then look at a picture of the gum nut babies, see the little houses that the babies live in.
"Gum-Nut Babies love to sit in the sunshine, warming various parts of themselves while they think. They think of everything and wonder why; maybe that's how they came to look so solemn. From Gum-Nut Babies
Look at all the different sorts of Bush babies, there are many native flowers depicted.
The villains of the Australian bush are the "Big Bad Banksia Men'. They are the seed pods of the Coastal Banksia and are very evil. There aim is to eat all the Gum Nut babies and anything else that is "good". Mrs Snake, is a good friend of the B.B.Banksia men and she loves to eat gum nut babies as well as all the other bush creatures too. Mr Lizard is the protector of all the little bush creatures, he is not afraid of Mrs Snake or the Banksia Men, and has many run- ins with them.
