The people of the Land of Fate follow a set of Laws, or rules. These Laws were written down many years ago by the Loregiver, who was inspired by Fate. The scrolls were hidden until they were discovered by the first Grand Caliph. They are split into five sections: 1. Forbidden Acts. These are very bad and the penalty is usually death. Forbidden acts are: Violating the Dead (i.e. bodies still with flesh on them) as the living and the dead should not mix. Murder of the Innocent, Blasphemy, Persecuting the Faithful, High Treason (plotting against the Grand Caliph or his rule), Hurtful Theft, Breaking an Oath (sworn in the name of Fate), Wilfull destruction. 2. Discouraged Acts. These aren't very nice things, but not as thoroughly evil as Forbidden Acts. Punishments include being made a slave, put in prison, having a limb chopped off, being fined, losing property or a punishment appropriate to the crime. Discouraged Acts are: Common Theft, Assault, Justifiable Manslaughter, Bribery, Recklessly causing danger, Lying to harm another in public, Breaking Local Custom, Disturbing the Peace. 3. Tolerated Acts. These are things everyone has a "right" to do. Tolerated Acts are: Make a Profit, Worship one's god in an Open Mosque, Free Speech. 4. Encouraged Acts. These are the virtues or good things people try to do. Encouraged Acts are: Worship Enlightened Gods, Enforcing the Law, Tolerance of Others, Prayer (three times a day), Paying Taxes. 5. Required Acts. Things everyone is expected to do. Failure to do so can mean exile. Required Acts are: Faith (in a greater force, such as Fate), Charity, Hospitality, Loyalty, Duty, Pilgrimage (and at least once to travel to the Great Mosque in Huzuz). |
