The main thing needed for your pet is Love and Affection. If you bought a dog : A bed, a food dish, and if you want to keep them clean a bathtub. If you bought a cat: Litter Box, food dish, bed, and a playarea. The cats will also enjoy another cat as they will play together :) If you bought any other pet you do not need any other items.

Yes you can. When you take your pet out of your inventory and put him on your lot you will then have a few new interactions with the pets. One of which will be change name. Just click on that and then personalize. Easy as 1,2,3.
