~ Temari - the Art of Japanese Thread Ball Weaving ~

The word Temari translates literally from Japanese as "hand-ball". This signifies that originally, Temaris were created as children's toys, balls with which bouncing games were played, and accompanied by "tamari-uta", the singsong chants that children the world over sing with games.

Temari today has achieved the significance in Japan of being a very special gift, one that is presented on an auspicious occasion to a beloved friend or family member. Today's Temaris are no longer used as toys, they now hold the proud status of an art form.

Today's Temaris incorporate the ancient tradition of Japan with modern day materials, thus melding the elegance, unlimited color combinations and variety of design itno a delightful and exquisite needle art to be treasured and proudly displayed.

The exact origins of Temari are obscure to us, and research in the English language has been difficult with a handicraft that is indigenous to Japan, therefore it is impossible to provide totally accurate information regarding authentic materials and traditional methods of Temari.

Temari is described as "embroidering the surface of a ball". Te means 'hand' and mari means 'ball'. Temari is as unique as any needle art can possibly be. It is beautiful, and it works, simply because it exists. Its 1000-year old traditions are well-grounded in simple methods that are practical, functional, and proven.

Temari's popularity grows and grows because of its ability to solve problems with easy solutions and because of its intriguing ability to absorb the crafter with its developing designs. With curiosity and fascination, we explore the time-honored techniques that continue, time and again, to surprise and delight us with their flair and elegant simplicity of execution. Unlike anything else, its fascinations, its soothing serenities, its creative expansiveness, set temari apart from all other fiber art and craft forms.

Once the basics of the Temari are understood, it is easy and fun to explore other colors and design ideas, making every Temari a true 'work of art', original in its conception and design, and a treasured show-piece or gift that will be cherished for generations.
