Mark
Chapter
10 (Continued)
10:32-34``Now,
they were on the way/road . . .
going
up to Jerusalem.
And
there was proceeding before them Jesus
and
they were amazed.
And,
those that were 'following along as students' {akoloutheo}, were fearing.
And,
having taken again the Twelve,
He
{Jesus} began to be speaking concerning
the
things that were about to be converging into Him, 10:33``
"Behold
{pay attention} we are going up to Jerusalem,
and
the 'Son of Man' {title for the humanity of Jesus Christ}
will
be 'betrayed over'/'given over' {paradidomi}
to
the chief priests and scribes/'experts in the law' . . .
and
they will condemn Him to death
and
betray/'give {paradidomi} Him
over
to the Gentiles {specifically the Romans} . . . 10:34``
and
they will mock {empaizo} Him,
spit
{emptuo} on Him,
scourge/flog
Him severely {mastigoo} . . .
and
kill Him.
Yet
after three days . . . He will rise again {anistemi}."
10:35``And,
there comes to Him {Jesus}
James
and John . . . the sons of Zebedee, saying to Him,
"Teacher,
we want that whatever we ask You,
You
will do for us."
10:36``And
He {Jesus} said to them,
"What
do you want Me to do for you?"
10:37``And
they say to Him {Jesus},
"Grant/Permit
one of us at once
that
one on Your right {hand side}
and
the other on Your left {hand side} . . .
that
we might sit in Your glory."
10:38``But
He {Jesus} said to them,
"You
absolutely do not {ouk} comprehend/know {oida}
what
you are asking for yourselves.
'Are
you able'/'Do you have the power' {dunamai}
to
be drinking the cup which I am drinking
and
with the baptism with which I am baptized,
'are
you able'/'do you have the power' {dunamai}
to
be baptized?"
{'His cup' was the cross filled with punishment for all sins ever
committed by mankind and His baptism was unique. None of us
'are able'.}
10:39-40``And,
they {John and James} said to Him {Jesus},
"We
'are able'/'have the power' {dunamai}."
And,
Jesus said to them, "The cup which I drink, you will drink.
And,
the baptism with which I am baptized,
with
that baptism you will be baptized . . . 10:40``
but
the sitting on My right hand
or
My left hand
is
absolutely not {ouk} Mine to give . . .
but
it is for those for whom it has been prepared."
{God's decreed plan determined in eternity past
who God would grace with these honors}
10:41``And,
when the {other} ten heard,
they
began to be indignant {aganakteo}
with
James and John {and kept it up}.
10:42-45``And,
having called them to Himself,
Jesus
says to them, "You know that those
who
are recognized as ruling over the Gentiles . . .
'lord
it over' {katakurieuo} them.
And,
'those in high positions'/'their great ones' {megas}
dominate/'
exercise authority' {katexousiazo} over them. 10:43``
But
absolutely not {ouk} thus . . . is it among you.
But
whoever if {ean} desires
-
maybe they do, maybe they do not {3rd class condition} -
to
be great {megas} among you . . .
must
be your servant/
'one
who ministers to the others' {diakonos}. 10:44``
And
whoever if {an} desires {subjunctive mood}
-
maybe they do want, maybe they do not want -
{'an' plus the subjunctive mood in the apodosis - 3rd class
condition}
to
be the first {protos} among you
will
be the slave {doulos} of all. 10:45``
For
even the 'Son of Man'
absolutely
did not {ouk} come to have service rendered to Him,
but
to render service . . .
and
to give His life/soul {psuche} . . . a ransom for many."
{His soul/life/'relationship with God as another perfect being' was
'ransom' for all mankind from the slavemarket of sin by His One
Work - the cross}
10:46``And,
they come into Jericho.
And,
as He {Jesus} is proceeding out from Jericho . . .
and
His disciples and a large crowd,
Bartimaeus,
the son of Timaeus . . . blind . . . a beggar,
was
sitting alongside the road/way . . . begging.
10:47``And,
having heard that it was Jesus,
the
Jesus of Nazareth, he began to keep on crying out and saying,
"Son
of David . . . Jesus . . . have mercy { eleeo} on me at once!"
10:48``And,
many kept on censuring him severely to the effect
that
he should become quiet . . . but he cried out all the more,
"Son
of David, have mercy {eleeo} on me at once!"
10:49-50``And,
coming to a standstill,
Jesus
said, "Call him at once."
And,
they call the blind man, saying to him,
"
'Be of good courage'/'Have courage'!
Be
arising . . . He {Jesus} is calling you." 10:50``
And,
having thrown off his 'outer garment'/cloak,
having
leaped up . . . he came to Jesus.
10:51``And,
'having an answer for'/'giving a discerning answer
from
the ultimate source of Himself to' {apokrinomai} him,
Jesus
said, "What are you desiring that I shall do for you?"
The
blind man said to Him, "Rabbi/Master {rhabboni} . . .
that
I might recover my sight."
10:52``And,
Jesus said to him,
"Go/Be
off . . . your faith has 'healed you perfectly'/
'healed
you in the past with the result that you are healed forever'."
And,
immediately he recovered his sight
and
was 'following Him as a student' {akoloutheo}
on
the Way/road.
{Note:
Following Jesus as a student on the Way has two meanings. The
physical - walking after Him as a student would follow a Teacher.
But, also as Paul says, "Imitate me . . . as I imitate Him".
It means to pattern your lifestyle after that of the teacher. And,
how do you do that? By replacing your human viewpoint with His divine
viewpoint and apply that viewpoint to your life's experiences.}
