A BRIEF BIO.
Madonna was born into a large family outside of Detroit, Michigan and from an early age decided to distinguish herself from her siblings and everyone else on the planet.....
Madonna's first album (released in 1983) was forged from the discos of Manhattan in the late 1970s and early  1980s. Consisting of a handful of disco-pop numbers, it slowly made its way onto pop radio thanks to some catchy tracks and videos ("Holiday", "Lucky Star") and eventually hit the top 10 in 1984, a year after its release. Madonna's star was already on the rise by then but it wasn't until the late-1984 release of her "Like a Virgin" album that Madonna truly became a megastar. Madonna's career trajectory saw a dizzing ascent. In 1986 she released "True Blue". Co-produced with pop heavyweights, this album spawned multiple #1 hits and is a perfect example of 80s pop was met with even bigger sales than its predecessor. 1989 saw the release of "Like a Prayer", a transcendant album about religon, love, life, death and proving Madonna was easily capable of bringing true art to pop music just as easily as she could give us timeless and catchy dance grooves.
1989-1991 were arguably Madonna's peak years commercially and culturally during this time she put out an amazing album ("Like a Prayer") released her biggest hit ("Vogue") and unleashed her infamous Blonde Ambition Tour across the world. Coming at the tail end of this non-stop parade came "The Immaculate Collection", her timeless and crucial greatest hits album that continues to sell like hotcakes to this day.
Wheras the 80s gave rise to Madonna the pop phenom, the 90s gave rise to a very different sort of Madonna,  an arsty, musically risk-taking Madonna.. Almost back to back in 1992 came both her notorious and ill-received "SEX" book, and her rather low-key "Erotica" album. The album, while consisting of some good tracks, got lost in the frenzy of the book and Madonna's popularity and street cred plummeted. In '94 she released "Bedtime Stories", a very cool, mellow jazz-tinged album that while met with cool sales remains a wonderful album.
1996 saw the birth of Madonna's first child and in 1998 she released "Ray of Light", a phenomenal, techno-influenced album which both regenerated the fanbase and gave Madonna a new height in critical praise. The follow up to this was 2000's "Music", which cemented her return to the dancefloor and spawned the massive title track and several smash singles.
In 2003 she returned with "American Life", an almost mid-life crisis album in which she looks back on her life, her fame, takes a look at her present life and questions the future. What will the future hold for this wife, mother and icon? Only time will tell but as always with Madonna, expect the unexpected.
