| Food Commentary: French Fries Vs. Freedom Fries There has been much debate lately about renaming the popular food item French Fries to Freedom Fries because of our current problems with the French. Which ever side you fall on, please remember that such a renaming of food is NOT unpresidented! Durning WW1, when Germany became an adversary, the 'All American' Hamburger (named for that German City) was renamed 'Liberty Steak', and Sour Kraut became 'Liberty Cabbage'. Likewise, during WW2, when again our dislike for anything German returned, Hamburger became Salsbury Steak, and the Frankfurter (named for another German town) became, of course, the Hot Dog. Renaming food to suit the current social atmosphere has long been an American Tradition. You can either accept it, or move to France like Johnny Depp. In this vein, at the Gourmet we DO offer Freedom Fries, as well as Beer-Battered Freedom Fries, Sweet Potato Freedom Fries, Curly Cut Freedom Fries, Freedom Dip Sandwiches, and Freedom Dressing. Freedom never TASTED so good. God Bless America, and God Bless our Troops!! |
