Risk Factors for Gay Youth in School:

  • 80% report verbal abuse
  • 90% report they sometimes or frequently heard homophobic remarks
  • 44% report threats of attack
  • 33% report being threatened with a weapon compared to 7% of heterosexual students
  • 19% report suffering physical attacks so severe that professional medical services were required  In an Australian study the number of physically attacked gay youth was 13% with 70% of the attacks taking place in the school
  • 46% reported sexual harassment
  • 42% reported being physically harassed or assaulted
  • the average student hears anti-gay epithets 25 times a day
  • teachers who hear these slurs fail to respond 97% of the time

University of South Carolina (study by James Sears):

  • 66% of school cousellors had negative attitudes about gay youth
  • 52% of prospective teachers reported they would feel uncomfortable working with an openly gay person
  • 53% of gay youth reported hearing homophobic comments made by school staff
