Castell Rhaglan

This photocomposite of Castell Rhaglan was taken in the pouring rain, on my first afternoon in Wales. I was very jet-lagged, but this is an extremely beautiful location.

Castell Rhaglan showing its moat, gatehouse and famed Yellow Tower of Gwent

The fortress was built by William ap Thomas and his son Herbert at the end of the castle-building era, with the primary construction running for about 40 years, beginning in the 1430s. Castell Rhaglan was as renowned for its luxury, ostentatious decor and exquisite gardens, as it was for its strength.

Castell Rhaglan as seen from its Pitched Stone Court

This image of the courtyard makes me think of the amazing craft and patience, medieval masons possesed. Stone is not a quick skill. The ability to make structure appear delicate, yet still endure, requires a refined judgement bought only by years of experience. Rhaglan shows this delicacy in many ways....By the same light, this composite required great patience from John as he took two of my images, shot at maximum wide angle and fought to wed them. The left hand tower does not really lean and the right wall of the courtyard is actually very vertical, thus revealing the spherical aberation of my camera lens. ...text and images - L.
