The Amazing Tudor House at Chirk Castle

After departing from the gerdens, we noticed this beautiful tudor house on the castle grounds. A carpenter was actively involved in repairs on the structure and since we had this trade in common, we happily talked shop for a while, comparing techniques from both sides of the Atlantic.

It would appear that there is an endemic problem with the tudor style of construction, in that the joint of the wood framing and the plaster-like sheathing is not watertight. once water penetrates this surface, it wets the wood on a long term basis, thus rot can attack the house at these locations. It seems that modern silicone-based flexible caulks should prove valuable for this problem.

Never-the-less, the extensive wood surfaces allow, given the finances, the addition of relief carving to the exterior of the house. If you look carefully at the friezeboard the front windows, the relief-carvings become apparent. This show of craft really impressed us, since it lifted an already attractive home into something truely lovely.
