For many years Ive wanted to paint goths because of the style, the people and the black paint. In 2002 I was given the opportunity to paint some pictures to be displayed in Victorian Gothic for the Window Works exhibition. Louise of Victorian Gothic lent me photographs of her fashions to use as models for the paintings. However, my proposal in the exhibition was not accepted; I was disappointed and I had these small paintings of goths. So I thought that I would have my own goth exhibition, except I only had a few small paintings. I asked Tim Harris if there were any other artists who would be interested in a group goth exhibition and so the Crypt Orchid started. I am inspired by the black of the Spanish Baroque; the blacks of Ribalta and de Zurbaran are perfection in paint. I learnt about music dressed in the black of the Velvet Underground (I also listen to Bauhaus, Placebo, Chemical Brothers) I relish the black humor of William S. Burroughs. At heart I am an anarchist, a surrealist and a nihilist. |
