::The Chapel:: Episode Guide Gallery Links Music The Hanson/Depp Connection |
| The show was loosely based on a real undercover unit in Los Angeles and normally filmed in Vancouver, Canada.
Johnny initially turned down the role of Tom Hanson, and actor Jeff Yagher played the part in the series pilot. But when Yagher didn't work out, Depp reconsidered and signed on. Officer Judy Hoffs is the only Jump Street member to become detective. Hoffs is also the only character to remain with the show throughout its network and syndication run. Frederic Forrest who played Captain Richard Jenko for the first six episodes was written out of the show due to the fact that he and the writers weren't in agreement with some of the writing. He was killed off in a "death by drunk driver" episode. Steven Williams would replace him as Captain Adam Fuller. Frederic Forrest can be seen in Johnny's film "The Brave" playing the role of his father. Many stars-to-be appeared in small roles on the show. Some of them are Jason Priestley, Sherilyn Fenn, Josh Brolin, Blair Underwood, Pauly Shore, Christina Applegate and Brad Pitt. Johnny and Peter Deluise sang the JUMP!! backup vocals to the opening theme song while Holly Robinson sang the lead. The "21 Jump Street" theme song was written by Liam Sternberg, who also wrote "Walk Like an Egyptian" for The Bangles. Judy Hoffs' last name was in honor of Susanna Hoffs of the Bangles. The 1968 Mustang that Tom Hanson drove belonged to his father, who was an officer killed in the line of duty. David DeLuise (Peter's younger brother) guest starred as Stephenson (the protected mob witness) in "Number One With A Bullet." He appears only at the beginning of the show (he is the one that Penhall gets shot trying to protect. Hanson's favorite pasttime is bowling. He calls strikes "Slammerinos". Sal Jenco (Sal "Blowfish" Banducci) is a childhood friend of Johnny Depps who also plays drums in his band, "P." In Johnnys 1996 movie "Dead Man," there is a character played by Iggy Pop named Sal "Sally" Jenco. The series finale, "Second Chances," was directed by Steven Williams (who went on to appear in The X-Files). It was not the last episode filmed, but it was the last ever broadcast. The last episode Johnny appeared in was "Blackout," but only because the producers had held it back to be the season finale. The last episode that Johnny Depp filmed was actually "How I Saved The Senator," in which he performed in a silent film version of...how Hanson saved the senator. In the episode "Hi Mom", the regular cast takes a back seat to the guest stars until the end, when Depp as Hanson shows up to make an arrest, with a nosebleed he isnt even trying to hide. With the impending departure of Johnny, Dennis Booker, played by Richard Grieco was cast. The character was supposed to be killed off at the end of the third season but he became so popular that Fox spun him off to his own series. However, it lasted only a single season. Billy Idol performed the theme song "Hot In The City", for the show. At the end of season 4, Hanson and Ioki disappear without a trace. They didn't get any goodbye scenes and their names are never mentioned again. Peter DeLuise (Doug Penhall) directed 3 episodes, He directed "Back From the Future", "Number One With a Bullet", and "Film at Eleven". Ioki's (Dustin Nguyen) real name is Vinh Van Tran. The H.T. in Ioki's name stood for "Harry Truman". Hanson had a black and white picture of Batman and Robin from the original TV series picture hanging behind his desk. Although the character of Hanson was gone, apparently his car wasn't. It was shown a few times parked in front of Jump Street headquarters, long after the character had left. Peter DeLuise is currently a writer for the Sc-Fi series "Stargate Atlantis". He appeared in an episode of "Friends" as a bully who steals Chandler's baseball cap. Dustin Ngyuen is a regular cast member of Pamela Anderson's TV series "V.I.P." In real life, his wife Angela, was injured in a car accident and paralyzed from the neck down. Although doctors said she wouldn't be able to recover her motor skills, she has regained the use of her arms and hands. Holly Robinson Peete starred in the long-running '90s sitcom Hangin' With Mr. Cooper. She is married to football star Rodney Peete and they have three children. _____________________________________________________________________________ Lyrics to the 21 Jump Street's theme song We never thought we'd find a place where we belong. Don't have to stand alone, we'll never let you fall. Don't need permission to decide what you believe. I said jump, down on Jump Street. I said jump, down on Jump Street. Your friends will be there when your back is to the wall. You'll find you'll need us cause there's no one else to call. When it was hopeless a decision is what you need. You'd better be ready to, be ready to jump. 21 Jump Street by Holly Robinson |
