Quest for Excellence has a lot more design to do, so it may have some pretty big changes. The only thing that I'm almost sure about is you start out in adventure school. The world of Gamyewt has learned not to take peace for granted. To make sure that no forces of evil take them by surprise, the different countries have allowed the Adventurer's School to be built. The Adventurer's School is a bit like college. Anyone who can afford to goes there, even if they don't want to be an adventurer. There, they're given the option to learn about magic, fighting, crafting, along with more practical matters lke non-fighting magic, non-weapon crafting, and farming. A secret school of rouges has also set up base there. When a students finish, they are given one last task: go take on a quest and do something that you believe is important. When you come back with proof of accomplishment, you graduate. As the main Character, you of course want to be an adventurer. The first third or so of the game is about going through school and thus setting up your 'class', and, more importanly, making friends and enemies. Who and how you interact with will be major factors later in the game. If you play as a fighter-type, but only make friends with the rogue-types, finishing school may be more difficult, but the famous highway robber may leave you be, or even give you help since you're good pals from school. The major design issue now is how magic shoul be done. So far, mana is going to be done as kind of an invisible weather effect. There will be a pattern of 'magic clouds' that you can draw power from. Some places may have a 'magic drought', and you can only do magic with what you have stored in majica gems and such. Spell casting has yet to be dicided. I wan something that's fairly scientific, something that can be taught in a classroom, something that takes different elements of magic and mixes them together to make spell. The Wheel of Time series is pretty close to what magic should be like in this game, but I'm not sure if it's exactly right for this. The casting system needs to be easy, but I'd like to have some sort of putting elements together, and maybe some learning how to best put spells together. |
