Chapter 51

She sat in the waiting room that had been turned into a private room for her and everyone there for MacKenzie thanks to Nick.  She was unaware of who was in the room with her but she knew there were people around running their hands over her hair, rubbing her back, telling her it was going to be ok, that MacKenzie was strong.  She couldn't believe this was happening.  Her daughter was more than sick, she was near death and all she could do was sit there and hope that those who were trained to do so could save her life.
"I can't just sit here."  Her father reached over and pulled her into his arms,
"Baby, you have to stay strong."  She looked down at the floor as her tears fell in her lap.  Chris settled down in front of her down on her knees and placed her hand on her leg,
"Is there anything I can get you baby?"  She shook her head and looked up since she entered the room.  She saw Larry, Elliott and James but she didn't see Nick.  It figures, it figures when she really needed him the most he wasn't there for her.  He would never be the father she needed him to be for her daughter, he was useless.  She leaned down near Chris's face,
"Where's Nick?"  Chris looked around the room and gave Quinn a sympathetic look as she shook her head,
"I don't know sweetie.  Do you want me to look for him?"  She shook her head,
"No, just forget it."  She stood up and everyone stood up with her,
"I just want to be alone."  James shook his head,
"No, you don't need to be by yourself."  She didn't need or want anyone fussing over her,
"I'm fine."  She began to walk away and James stood before her.  She shook her head and held her hand out,
"I'm fine.  I just need to get some air."  James began to follow her and she stopped,
"No, please."  He nodded and sat down, she coud tell he was upset from her rejection but she just didn't want to be bothered with people telling her it was all going to be ok.  She walked out the room and walked down the hall.  Once she was at the elevator she looked to see Chris walking up to her,
"I'm going with you so save it."  She knew not to fight Chris.  She would just follow ten feet behind her evrywhere she went if she had to.  They stepped in the elevator and Chris put her hand on Quinn's shoulder,
"I have my keys, we're going for a ride."  Quinn shook her head,
"I can't, something could happen-"
"They have my cell phone number and we won't be gone for long.  I promise."

Quinn was sitting in the car as Chris went into a convienience store to buy her some Kleenex.  She watched as the people walked in and out of the store, wondering what their lives were like.  She would do anything to go back a couple of weeks.  Chris sat down in the driver's seat and she watched as she opened the little bag and handed her Kleenex,
"Thanks."  Chris nodded and ran her hand over Quinn's hair,
"I can't believe how long your hair has gotten."  It was a random comment but it was better than hearing that things were going to be ok,
"Thanks." She laughed lightly and let her seat down as far as it would go so she was lying down,
"What?"  She shook her head,
"Nothing, just I don't know."  She closed her eyes and groaned as she heard a familiar song on the radio,
"Can't get away from the asshole if I tried."  Her eyes began to water as I Want It That Way filled the car,
"Why don't you tell him you love him?"  Quinn looked over at Chris, she was about to deny it but when she saw the look on Chris' face she figured why bother,
"Because he doesn't love me and it would be a waste of time."  Chris shook her head,
"How do you know?"  Quinn lifted her head and looked at Chris,
"How do I know?  How do I know he'll let me down again?  Besides from all the other times he has?  Where is he Chris?  Our daughter is in trouble and he was nowhere to be found.  He didn't even come over to me and hug me or say something, anything."  She lay her head back down and whispered,
"I hate him."  She didn't, she knew she didn't, she never could,
"You don't hate him.  If you did, you wouldn't care if he was here or not.  You wouldn't want him to be apart of Mac's life."  She shook her head,
"That's for Mac."  Chris shook her head,
"Maybe a little but more than anything you want him there for you.  James loves Mac and she may not be his but he loves her just the same.  She's going to have a father in her life, maybe not her own but-"  She stopped and took a deep breath,
"Quinn, just stop saying things about Nick that you don't mean." Quinn sighed and rolled her eyes,
"What?  And tell him I love him and want him?"  Chris shook her head,
"No, but you'll be surprised what happens when you just stop lying, to Nick and yourself.  Things have a way of just happening."

When they returned her mother and Nate were in the waiting room.  She ran into her mother's arms and began to cry all over again,
"Mom."  Her mother rocked her as they stood in the middle of the room,
"It's ok baby, calm down."  She pulled back and looked at her mother,
"Did they tell you?  What happened?"  Her mother nodded her head,
"Yes, she's going to make it honey.  She's going to make it."  She sat down in a chair and noticed that he room was empty,
"Where is everyone?"
"Your father went back to the hotel and your brother is in the cafeteria with James."  Chris sat on the other side of her and the three of them were silent as they all seemed to stare off into space.  She shook her head and stood up,
"I can't sit in here." Chris was about to stand up and she shook her head again,
"No, really this time.  I want to be alone.  I'm just going to walk around the hospital."  She could see the hesistancy on Chris' face,
"I'm serious, I just need some time.  I'll be fine."  She walked down the hall in a trance not really paying attention to where she was going and who was around her.  Her life seemed like something from a movie, things like this didn't happen to her.  She wasn't supposed to end up pregnant, her baby wasn't supposed to be sick, she wasn't supposed to love Nick.  She frowned, the last part just came out of nowhere.  Did she love Nick?  Chris seemed to see it so clearly, she was sure of it but Quinn wasn't.  What was love supposed to feel like?  Was love James or Nick because she felt two totally different things when she was with them.  She sat down in a chair that was up against a wall and watched as people walked by, none seeming to notice her sitting off in a corner.  Suddenly a man sat down next to her and offered her a tissue.  She didn't even know she had started to cry,
"Thank you."  He nodded and smiled at her warmly,
"My name is Michael.  Micheal Blocker, my daughter is on this floor."  She nodded,
"I'm Quinn...Garner.  Is your daughter sick?"  He nodded and she finally felt like she had someone to talk to, someone who really understood.
