Chapter 5

It was around five-thirty when there was a knock on his door.  He was sure it was someone telling him he needed to be ready to leave for the radio station by six o'clock.  He opened the door to see Brian standing there,
"Hey Nick, can you do me a favor?"  Nick sighed,
"What?"  Brian walked past him and sat down on the couch.  Nick stretched his arm out as if inviting him,
"Come on in, make yourself comfortable."  Brian smiled,
"Thanks man."  Nick nodded and rolled his eyes,
"What's up?"  Brian leaned forward as if what he was going to ask was really intense.  Oh no, Nick thought, not another attempt to get him to go to church with him,
"Well, you know tomorrow morning Kevin, Howie and I are supposed to do the morning show on the radio?"  Nick nodded,
"Yeah."  Brian nodded,
"Well, you and AJ are doing the show tonight.  I was wondering if I could switch with you."  Nick frowned,
"Brian, you know I hate to get up early."  Brian nodded,
"I know, but Leighanne is flying in late tonight and I don't want to have to get up early you know?"  Nick groaned,
"Ask AJ."  He nodded,
"I already did, he and April have plans.  You know how that girl likes to plan stuff.  They're having some psychic come in and read their palms and stuff.  It's already set up and the lady will be here at ten am.  Please buddy."  Nick sighed heavily and closed his eyes,
"Alright, fine but you owe me."  Brian jumped up and wrapped his arms around Nick,
"I know, whatever you want."  Nick pushed him off of him and laughed as Brian made his way out of the room.  As soon as he stepped out he pulled out his cell phone,
"All taken care of, I'm going to the station tonight with AJ instead of him.  Yep, it was a piece of cake, he never gave it a second thought."  He smiled as he stepped on the elevator, Nick wasn't going to be happy, good thing he wasn't going to be there.

Nick sighed as there was another knock on his door,
"What now?"  He looked over at the clock, it was probably Larry still thinking he was going to the radio station,
"Hey Lar-"  He stopped when he saw Kristin standing at the door,
"Hey."  She smiled as she walked past him and sat on the couch.  What is it with people just barging in he thought, they were all way too comfortable with each other.  Although he didn't mind her,
"Hi, I was around when Brian told Larry you weren't going to the station tonight.  Kevin, Howie and I are going out to dinner.  Wanna go?"  He shook his head,
"No way, I don't want to go anywhere that requires me to wear a tie and know the difference between Versace and Gucci."  She giggled,
"No way, I'll be there so we're going someplace relaxed like Friday's.  Come on."  He sighed,
"Might as well.  Is what I'm wearing ok?"  She nodded,
"Yeah, just change the pants."  He nodded,
"But then you'll need to change the shirt."  He stopped and stared at her,
"And the shoes would be all wrong."  She stood up and walked towards his suitcase,
"Here, let's just find you something."  He wanted to be irritated with her but he couldn't, all he could do was smile.  He had known her for years and he still had an innocent crush, his stomach still flip flopped when she smiled at him or gave him a compliment.

"Ok, I understand, don't worry about it."  She hung up the phone as she begin to sulk about her friend having to bail out on her for babysitting duty at the last minute.  She dialed Elliott's number, he was the only other person who she trusted with MacKenzie.  In fact, aside from Christina he was the only person who knew who Mac's father was.  Elliott, just like Christina, ragged on her every chance he got about telling Nick he had a daughter.  It got to the point where she tried to avoid their calls because she didn't want to be bitched at about Nick.  She groaned when she got voice mail on his cell and home phones.  She placed the phone down and sat on the couch, guess she was going to have to cancel.

She walked in MacKenzie's room and smiled as she looked at the bright colors of rainbows, clouds and smiling suns on the wall.  She didn't want Mac's room to be too frilly girly and pink, after all the girl's name was MacKenzie.  Her mother still would fret over her name but she would remind her that her name, Quinn, was not the most feminine name in the world.  Her mother was happy that MacKenzie did bare her own name.  MacKenzie Lillian, her mother loved to call her Lilly.

She went back into the living room and found the restaraunt in the phone book,
"Hi, you do have a non-smoking section right?"  The host told her they did and assured her that it was completely smoke free and would be just fine for her four month old.  She walked back into MacKenzie's room and pulled put a little Tommy outfit that her mother thought was simply too cute to remain in the store.  It was a pair of red pants with a red, white and blue sweatshirt with a little bow and some Tommy shoes.  She never would have bought that, but her parents' and her single child-free brother had more disposable income than she did now.  She changed her diaper, dressed her and checked her diaper bag to make sure she had an adequate stock.  She smiled as she grabbed the car seat, the bag and her purse and walked out the door, actually getting excited about showing off her beautiful baby.  It wouldn't be so bad.  None of them knew she had a baby but they wouldn't automatically think she was Nick's baby.  Kevin, Kristin and Howie would be easy eyes to pull the wool over.  Once her seatbelt was buckled she turned and looked at her,
"Ready for a coming out party babe?"  She sighed,
"This should be interesting."
