Chapter 2

Quinn stepped into her parents' house and made her way to the family room.  It was where her father spent the most time.  It was a typical Florida home, very open, many windows and a lot of light.  Her parents' home reminded her of a museum, which was the exact opposite of her own home, well condo, but it was her little home, with a small backyard.  Her dad was sitting in his favorite chair watching his favorite toy, the 60 inch screen TV.  He was a big man, her height definitely came from his side of the family.  He had a medium compexion and Quinn fell somewhere in between her father and her mother's shades of brown.  She sat down on the couch,
"Hey dad.  Where's ma and Mac?"  He smiled as he continued to watch TV,
"Upstairs."  She shook her head,
"How can you watch golf?  I can only watch when Tiger is playing."  He shook his head,
"Well you're missing out.  It's relaxing, besides it's the only sport I can watch that your mom doesn't nag me about."  She nodded and made her way upstairs.  She walked into her parents' huge master bedroom.  Everytime she was in there, she marveled at it, it looked like something from a magazine.  Move over Martha Stewart, she had to give her mother credit, she definitely had a knack for designing a room.  She still hadn't let her mom come and fix her place up even though at his point her mother was practically begging.  She was nearly drooling when she came down to visit Quinn.  She watched her mom with a smile.  She was a petite woman, about 5'5" with beautiful round brown eyes and very light skin.  It always surprised her friends that her mother's parents were both black, her mother was so light.
"Hey ma."  She walked further into the room and smiled as she watched her mother,
"Hi, I'm just putting my granddaughter down for her nap."  Quinn smiled,
"So have you been spoiling her while I was gone?"  Lillian Garner smiled,
"Of course, then when you take her home she can give you heck like you did to me.  That is the ultimate payback."  Quinn smiled,
"Yeah, yeah.  How was she?"  Lillian shook her head and smiled,
"She was an angel.  As usual.  Did you have fun with your friends?"  She nodded,
"Yeah."  Lillian sighed,
"You could have stayed longer or you should go to that concert.  We don't mind watching Lilly. It's not like you come up here all that often considering you're only four hours away."  She sighed, here we go with the guilt trip.  She knew her parents would watch her but she didn't want to leave Mac, it was part of the sacrificing she had to get used to since becoming a mother.  She shook her head,
"Nah, I really don't want to go anyway." she said as they walked out of the room. Lillian called out when Quinn wasn't following her downstairs,
"Where are you going?"  She called out over her shoulder,
"I need to make a phone call."  Her mother nodded and made her way downstairs as Quinn walked into her room, closed the door and pulled out her cell phone,
"Hello?"  She smiled,
"Christina Roy, how the heck are you?"  She and Christina were the best of friends still and she was thrilled that she had moved from Charlotte to Atlanta, it was a little closer to her.  She still wished she would have moved to Miami but the offer wasn't nearly as good as Atlanta,
"Have you told him yet?"  Quinn groaned,
"No, don't start Chris.  Come on."  Chris sighed heavily into the phone,
"You need to tell him Quinn.  It's only right."  From the day she found out to this very moment, Chris has pressured her about telling him,
"She's my daughter and I have every right-"  Chris' voice rose considerably,
"No, you don't have that right.  The only right you have is what you are doing now, raising your daughter and you're denying Nick that right and you're denying MacKenzie a chance to know her father, that is so wrong Quinn.  How would you feel if you didn't grow up with your dad?"  She rolled her eyes at this conversation that she was tired of having with Chris,
"Chris, he's young and not ready for this committment.  He won't do what he needs to do."  Chris sighed,
"Or maybe you're scared he will do the right thing.  Ok, or maybe he won't but at least you'll know and when the time comes you can tell Mac that.  Look, before you got pregnant did you think you were old enough and responsible enough?  Having a kid changes people quickly.  Look at you.  Mac is four months old and this is the first time you've been anywhere besides work or the store without her."  She shook her head, she and Nick couldn't be compared, they were totally different people,
"I'm a little bit more mature and responsible when it comes to this than Nick."  Nick still needed people to wake him up.  He needed people to lie to him about what time he needed to be somewhere just so he would get up on time,
"Well, when it comes to sex you guys have the same level of responsibility or you wouldn't be parents together."  That cut like a knife,
"So maybe when it comes to the baby you're on the same wavelength too.  Look it doesn't matter, all that matters is he has a right to know and you need to tell him before he misses out on anymore time with his daughter."  Quinn shook her head, she knew Nick wasn't going to care.  That he would dodge this responsibilty,
"He'll probably try and say she's not his since I was dating John."  Chris laughed,
"Please, one look at that baby and it's obvious one of her parents is not black.  If she was a little lighter she'd look like one of those albino alligators."  I screamed,
"Chris, that's not funny.  My baby is beautiful."  Chris laughed,
"Of course, no really she is.  Hey, I'm the one that told you to sign her up for that Gerber baby contest.  She could totally be the new Gerber baby, and those big green eyes.  Hey, are you sure you were sleeping with Nick and not Kevin?"  I groaned,
"Just because her eyes are green instead of blue....you hush.  Besides I've never seen a black person with blue eyes, I think it's impossible."  My little girl was a total beauty queen, if nothing else Nick's genes were a plus,
"Hey so are you still coming down next month?"  Chris was going to spend a few days in Miami,
"Yep, flying in Thursday night, then we're meeting up with Nick to introduce him to his youngest fan."  Quinn rolled her eyes,
"Yeah whatever."  Chris was hell bent on Nick knowing, part of Quinn knew Chris was right, well all of her knew Chris was right, but she couldn't begin to imagine how to tell Nick.  If she had some kind of sign as to how he would take it, it might make it easier.
