Chapter 19

They were in the middle of debating whether or not to attend an awards show in Canada when Nick's cell phone rang.  Kevin sighed,
"If it's not important Nick, don't bother."  Nick looked at his caller ID panel and nodded,
"I got to take this.  Hello?"  He wondered if something was wrong,
"Hi, are you busy?"  He nodded,
"In a group meeting.  What's up?"  He looked over to see the guys watching him,
"Oh I can let you go."  He shook his head,
"No, what is it?"  Kevin sighed as Quinn's voice came through the phone.  In the background he could hear MacKenzie,
"I just wanted you to hear the baby.  I put on I Need You Tonight since it was the only song with just your voice and she started cooing.  Listen."  Suddenly the sound of his voice was loud and clear and he could hear MacKenize making a bunch of noise.  He guess that's what cooing was,
"Ah that's sweet.  What's she doing?"  He saw the look on the other guys' faces and stood up.  Walking over to the other side of the room so they couldn't hear what he was saying,
"She's cooing, she's singing along with you.  Your daughter likes your voice."  He smiled and his heart was full of pride, his daughter.  Wow, he couldn't even believe he was hearing the words and then he said them aloud in awe,
"My daughter wow."  Quinn laughed,
"Yes, your daughter.  Hey, can you make a CD of yourself singing some songs for her?"  He nodded,
"Yeah, yeah of course."  He could see Kevin walking towards him and ended the conversation,
"Hey, I gotta go ok?  Call me tonight after the show, about 11:30."  She was barely able to say ok and goodbye before he hung up the phone.  Kevin sighed,
"Who was that and why was it so important?"  Nick shook his head and made his way back to the couch,
"None of your business and it was a thirty second call, don't blow it all up."  Kevin shook his head,
"No its the principle-"  Nick shook his head,
"Everything is not about some principle.  You're just bitching right now.  Get over it."  Brian sighed,
"Whatever, let's get this over it with so I can call my wife.  I told her I would before she had to leave for an appointment."  Kevin looked at Nick disapprovingly a moment longer but Nick didn't notice, which only made Kevin more upset, because his head was laying back on the couch and he was watching a bubble he was blowing with his gum.

Nick sat around that night after the show with nothing to do.  No friends on the road, no hanging out and partying.  Just as he was about to turn off the TV and try to sleep his cell phone rang,
"Hello?"  He heard music being turned down,
"Hey, it's Rachel.  What are you doing?"  Rachel?  Who the hell was Rachel and was he supposed to know her?
"Just sitting in my room.  Who is this again?"  She laughed,
"We met a couple of weeks ago in Atlanta.  At the club after the show.  We exchanged numbers and you told me to give you a call when you got to Cleveland."  He frowned,
"You're in Cleveland?"  She laughed,
"Yeah, I live here remember?  A couple of my friends and I just went to the Atlanta show to meet up with another friend of ours who lives there."  He nodded,
"Oh, cool."  He barely remembered what this girl looked like but she had to be cute enough, to him anyway, to give her his number,
"What are you doing?"  He sighed,
"Nothing, I'm bored.  I'm about to go to bed actually."  She laughed again and Nick frowned.  What the hell was she laughing about?
"You're sitting in your room like some old man.  Live it up, you're young, no wife, no kids.  Why don't you come out with me and my friends?"  No kids, if she only knew.  God, he didn't want to  be like that.  This is exactly what he didn't want, to be tied down and have to stop doing what he wanted and when he wanted.  The next thing he knew he was going to be going to 7-11 in the middle of the night for diapers,
"Nah, I'm not in the mood to go out but why don't you come to my hotel?"  She didn't hesitate,
"Ok."  He was all about fun this night,
"By yourself.  We'll have our own party."  Her voice lowered,
"Can't wait."  He gave her the hotel and his room number then called Larry to let him know he would be having a guest that night.

She arrived and he wasn't disappointed, she was wearing a pair of those really low tight jeans and they looked dirty but he knew that was the style.  Her top showed her belly and it was flat, showing off her bellyring that sparkled when the light hit it just right,
"Hi Nick."  He smiled,
"Hi Rachel.  Its good to see you again."  He hugged and kissed her on the cheek.  She sat on the couch and he looked over at her,
"Want something to drink?"  She smiled,
"Water would be nice." He nodded and walked over to the refrigerator, returning with a cold bottle of water with a napkin wrapped around it.  He turned on radio and she looked around,
"Wow, the room has a stereo system?"  He nodded, looking bored.  It was all so customary to him now, if his room didn't come with something he called down and they made it available,
"Yeah, hundred disc changer too."  he added as he shrugged.  He sat back down on the couch next to her and his eyes ran over her body,
"Did you like the show tonight?"  She nodded her head,
"It was great.  I couldn't stop watching you."  He nodded and smiled, not knowing what to say, not knowing how to get this started,
"Where do you guys go next?"  Nick sighed as he looked up,
"Detroit."  She frowned,
"Surprised you guys didn't leave right after the show since it's less than three hours away."  He shrugged,
"That's why we're here.  We're leaving around nine in the morning."  She nodded her head, it was obvious they really didn't have much to talk about so he was thankful when she just went for it by straddling his lap,
"I'm glad you called."  she said as she ran her fingers through his hair.  He nodded and licked his lips,
"Me too."  She leaned down and kissed him but their kissing session was interrupted by his ringing cell phone,
"Hold on."  He leaned forward and held his hand on her back to keep her from falling as he reached for his cell phone on the coffee table.  He sighed when he saw Quinn's number,
"Don't answer, its not impotant is it?"  He sighed again and shook his head,
"Nah, its not important."  He turned his phone off and went back to being a guy with no responsibilities and no worries.
