Chapter 82

On our way back to Miami, we made a stop to fill up the gas tank and I used it to call John, who of course left messages on my home and cell phones,
"Hey, where are you been?  I called your cell and it was off."  I had already thought of my lie as I walk around the parking lot of the gas station,
"I turned it off because I'm at the hospital.  I had to take a neighbor."  The lies are getting easier and easier,
"Are they ok?  What hospital?  Do you need me?"  I shake my head, not that he can see that,
"No, I'm fine, it's ok really.  I think it might be a couple more hours.  Why don't we all go out to dinner?"  I have to get out of this,
"Sure, I'll make reservations."
"Great, just leave the restaraunt and the time on my voice mail on my cell phone and I'll meet you."  He sighs,
"How much longer is it going to be? What's wrong with her?"  Now is not the time to play detective Nick is on his way out of the store,
"I'll tell you all about it.  I better go in case she needs me.  She's alone."  I hang up and Nick hands me a pack of gum,
"Does my breath stink?"  He frowns,
"What?  You said to get you some gum."  I laugh,
"I'm kidding, thanks."  He nods and points at my phone,
"Who was that?"  Damn Nick is so nosey when it comes to what I'm doing.  I'm surprised he doesnt ask me to wear a veil and long sleeved clothes and skirt,
"Just Elliott."  He nods and we walk back to the truck.  I'm setting the record for the most lies in a weekend.

We make it into my apartment complex and I kind of expect Nick to get out and walk me to the door but thats pushing it, chivalry is dead,
"Wanna come up and I'll dump my stuff out and give you your bag back."  He shakes his head,
"No, that's cool.  I'll get it later."  I lean into the window and we kiss briefly,
"See you."  I wave and walk up the sidewalk.

I walk behind the hostess as she leads me to John and his family.
"Hello.  Sorry I'm late."  John shakes his head as he stands up,
"No, we haven't been here long."  I smile and look around the table as he introduces me to his family, he looks like his dad and his sister looks like their mother,
"So Quinn, John tells us you're a big time computer person."  I smile and look over at John briefly,
"Yes sir."  He laughs,
"I can't even turn on one of those things."   Just like an aunt of mine,
"You can call me and I'll help you walk through it any time you like."  Dana, his sister laughs,
"Oh no, we tried that.  They are totally against technology."  John places his hand on top of mine,
"How is your neighbor?"  Lies, lies, once they start they can't stop,
"Oh, she's ok,  food poisoning and you know how emergency room waiting is."  They all nod and that starts everyone on their own personal horror stories about hospitals and doctors.  My night with John and his family was pleasant but I couldn't get my mind of Nick, wishing I was in LA.
