| Chapter 66 "So, you're in charge of the charity thing?" I watched her jet black hair bounce as she nodded, "It's a family thing really but for the most part the gala takes over my life for about four months a year." She was so young, probably younger than me and she was practically in charge of something that changes peoples lives. More and more I'm beginning to feel like such a slacker for my lack of a volunteerism. Everywhere I turn I see someone making a difference in the world. Howie, Kevin, Britney Spears has her own foundation, Brehan and now Sarah. "How did your family get involved with breast cancer?" She smiled at me and it seemed like she was happy that I was asking questions and seemed to be interested. She probably wanted me to write out a fat check. "My mother is a breast cancer survivor and the charity is named after her." I couldn't imagine something so scary and potentionally deadly occurring in my family. The last thing I wanted to think about was someone getting sick or even dying, "I'm glad she's ok. Are you going to be in the auction? She laughed as she tossed her hair, "No, I'll be too busy for that; running around like a chicken with it's head cut off." I smiled. That was Howie when he was having a fundraiser, he was no fun to be around and I usually ended up having to amuse myself. It was quiet now and uncomfortable silence was hanging heavy in the air, "How long have you and Brehan been friends?" I don't recall Brehan ever talking about her. As a matter of fact there were few girls she ever really talked about. "A little over a year."I find it kind of hard to believe that Brehan has any female friends. She seems to little too high maintenance and stuck on herself to be able to handle personal relationships with other women. Sarah has to be a very patient person who doesn't require being the center of attention. There is no such thing as two queen bees in the same hive. I have a feeling Brehan is in charge in whatever circle she is in. "Are you a model too?" She smiled and tossed her hair. It looked so soft, I wanted to run my fingers through it. She definitely had the looks. She was beautiful and her eyes were hypnotizing. They were so bright and against her olive skin and her dark hair they stood out like a cat's eyes in the dark. "Yes but not as big as Brehan. I guess I'm what you would call a part-time model." That seemed like it was fun. I wish I could be a part-time singer. Simply go onstage and making people happy then disappearing afterwards into a life of anonymity. No worries of autographs, pictures, interviews and photo sessions just doing the absolute enjoyable part. "That must be fun. You get to do something you like but not do it like a full time job." She nodded, "Yeah something like that. It's like freedom you know? Being able to choose what I want to do. Not working my butt off and traveling day after day and not just around the country but around the world. I don't know how Brehan does it." She rolled her eyes and laughed, "Sorry, I don't mean to go on about modeling." I didn't mind, I was the one who brought it up but it was refreshing that someone in this industry was aware of how much they talked about their career. I took the opportunity to look at her as she surveyed the room and I couldn't get over her beauty. She was wonderful to look at but there was something different about her good looks. Unlike the other girls of Los Angeles she didn't have blonde hair and her breasts weren't extraordinarily huge. She was more wholesome, more girl next door. Sexy girl next door, but girl next door nonetheless. She was like video girl sexy but not porn star sexy. Now I'm rambling on about the scale of her sexiness. I shook my head, "No it's fine. So when you're not modeling and doing charity work what are you doing?" Did she work as a hand model, a waitress or an assistant? "That's pretty much it but right now it's all about the charity. Afterwards who knows. Hey, why don't you come to the gala?" The door opened and Howie appeared. Without hesitation he smiled at Sarah, "Hello, how are you?" She smiled and nodded, "Hi." He looked at me, his eyes stretched, "Where's AJ?" I shrugged and waved him in, "Have a seat. He should be back soon." Actually now that Howie brought it up I was wondering where he and Brehan could be. It was a little surprising that they were off somewhere together. Maybe he was right, maybe he was going to get her. Maybe I shouldn't have invited Howie in. Wow, how was he going to take seeing AJ with Brehan? He sat down and I pointed at Sarah, "This is Sarah. She's a friend of Brehan's." I could see it in his face; it lit up at the mention of Brehan. "Brehan's here?" I nodded, "Yeah, she's around here somewhere. She should be back soon." Sarah looked at me, "Well, can you come?" I quickly forgot about her invitation to the gala, "When is it?" She smiled at me and I felt like I was trapped. I bet she is a great salesperson, "Saturday evening." I shook my head and gave her a pathetic look, "Sorry I can't we're leaving Saturday morning for Denver. We have a concert Monday night." She wasn't giving up that easy, "Come on. I'm sure you could take a private plane to Denver late Saturday night or Sunday morning. It's for a good cause. It's going to be fun. You can even bet on a bachelorette." I am not about getting dressed up and feeling stuffy but the thought of bidding on one of Brehan and Sarah's hot friends does sound interesting. "I'm flying out Sunday morning you can fly with me." He turned to Sarah, "You're not talking about the Stoakley Foundation Gala are you?" Her smile brightened, "Yes, Paige Stoakley is my mom." He nodded, "It's my first time attending. You guys do a great job." I was in the middle of being double teamed when the door opened and Brehan and AJ walked through, "Hello Brehan." She threw him a half smile and sat down on my lap, "Nick, did you and Sarah have fun?" I just looked at her and nodded my head. She leaned over and ran her hand over Sarah's cheek, "Did he treat you well Sare?" She nodded her head, "Yes but he won't come to the gala." She turned and looked down at me with a slight frown on her face, "Kid, you have to come. It will be lots of fun. I'm going to be there and Sarah is going to be there." I shook my head and frowned hoping that once I say no to her she will drop it, "I don't think so. We leave that day for Denver." Sarah shook her head and I smiled because I knew she wasn't going to let me get out of it, "Howie is going to be there and he's flying into Denver the next morning. If he can do it so can you." I shook my head at Sarah and she smiled as Brehan faced me again, "That's it, you're coming. Don't bother to say no anymore. You have no excuse, it's a good cause and Sarah is a nice girl." I sighed and was about to protest a little more when AJ spoke up, "He'll be there." I just held my head down and accepted that I was going to have to dress up like a penguin and eat nasty bland food. Brehan lifted my head and smiled at me, "You'll love it kid, Sarah is the best at throwing this boring thing." I glanced over at Sarah and noticed she didn't seem to pleased with Brehan's comment but she regained her composure very quickly. I tapped Brehan on the thigh, "Come on, let me show you around." Like I thought, you have to be accustomed to being number two when you're around Brehan. Chapter 67 Stranger Than Fiction Stories Feedback |
