Chapter 21

Leaving the awards with Brian, Leighanne and AJ I looked around one last time and waved at the kids who were still outside waiting before getting in the limo.  It was the longest and most boring awards show I'd been to in a long time.  Maybe it was that I participated in these things or maybe it was because I was younger and didn't know any better but when I was a kid MTV awards shows were the biggest thing in the world to me.  Now, it's like someone let the air out of my balloon.  I turned on my cell phone and listened to the messages.  One from my brother telling me he misses me and another from some girl saying she saw me the other night at the concert and that I did a good job. One day I'm going to have a cell phone number that no one else gets, even if I have to have six different numbers.  I hang up my phone just in time to hear,
"Brian, what time are we leaving?  I just want to network a little and go back to the hotel,  I have to get up early for my flight back to Atlanta."  I looked over at Brian,
"Oh that's right.  That play you want to do, yeah baby we'll leave early."  I looked out the window as the city flew by.  People always intrigue me.  I love to just sit back and watch, it's like a movie or something being played out right in front of you.  Right now, someone is having a baby, someone is dying, someone is having sex, someone is fighting all while I'm sitting in this limo on my way to an after party.  I see some guy and a girl walking and wonder what their story is.  What's going on in their life?  Are they happy?  I feel AJ shaking me and looked over at him,
"So?"  I gave him a confused look hoping it would throw him off but it didn't,
"So, when are you going to make your move?"  We discussed this already, well a little.  After I was tired of answering his questions I just ignored him.  Finally, Brian and Leighanne were tired of him leaning over them to get to me and told him to shut up during the awards.  I rolled my eyes,
"There are no moves to be made man."  He sighed, right along with Brian and Leighanne may I add,
"Dude, she gave you her phone number and she comes over to you for no reason tonight."  For a second I gave it some thought the first time he mentioned it but I let it go soon.  No girl has ever been so nasty to me upon first meetings.  Well, some of the other guys' fans always make it known I'm not their favorite but I have to laugh that off as they stand their waiting to get MY autograph, idiots.
"She was just thanking me for helping her and she never mentioned anything about the phone number or calling her, you were there."  AJ sighed,
"Well, why don't you ask her about it.  That would give you an excuse to talk to her."  Leighanne rolled her eyes and sighed,
"He doesn't want to AJ now leave him alone.  The two of them are nothing alike anyway.  Could you see Nick dating a supermodel?"  She and Brian laughed and AJ shrugged,
"Guess you're right."  He looked over at me,
"Well, give me her number."  I shook my head,
"I don't have it, I think I lost it.  I haven't seen it since that night she gave it to me."  AJ let out some strangled tortured noise,
"What?  What is wrong with you?"  I shrugged,
"She's not my type so why does it matter right?"  I looked back out the window, I didn't too much care for Leighanne's comment.  Maybe she was right, maybe Brehan and I weren't the right two people to make a relationship work, I would be the first to say it.  But that doesn't mean it needed to be said by her and in front of me like that.  Give a guy a complex would you?  I saw Olive Juice and I never said acting is not her kind of career.

We entered the party and Leighanne and Brian took off immediately to wherever and I stuck with AJ.  Which was cool but honestly, I wanted a drink and even though he said it didn't bother him, I didn't want to drink next to him like that.  I have a feeling it would be like when I was on my diet and had to eat salads and the guys would eat burgers in front of me, cruel and torturous.  He walked over and I followed him to one of those girls that was in American Pie.  I'm bad with names but I know it wasn't that chick that dated Carson Daly.  She saw us and hugged him,
"Hi AJ, how are you?"  He hugged her and shook some guy's hand,
"I'm fine."  It wasn't before long that I knew their connection, animal lovers and the guy was her husband.  I stood there for a moment trying to be interested but I really didn't care.  Maybe I should, maybe we should all care more but I really didn't care.  It didn't interest me just like my Nick Carter Ocean Campaign didn't interest me anymore.  I only did it because everyone else had their own charities and I felt a little pressured to help save the world.  Yeah, others did more with charities and events but just because I wasn't into that didn't make me a bad person or mean that I didn't care.  Ok, I admit the first thing I do when I wake up in the morning is not think about how to better the world but I still think I'm an ok person. I excused myself, after AJ asked me where I was going I whispered the bathroom, and walked over to the bar looking around for Brian and Leighanne. I would hang with them but I have a feeling my presence would disturb their networking. Kevin said I should do more of that but I don't really care to, the day I start networking with industry people, I call it kissing ass, is the day I leave this industry.

I nodded at the bartender as he handed me a Heineken, in a freaking glass may I say, and walked off.  I would have preferred a little Grey Goose but that's just me.  I made my way over to the other side of the room and started talking to Brian MacFayden from MTV and his girlfriend, one of those Hilton twins, I can't remember which one he was dating.
"So Nick, who are you here with?"  I smiled as I shook my head,
"Just AJ and Brian.  And Brian's wife."  Brian laughed,
"You don't look happy to be here."  I rolled my eyes,
"Is it that obvious?"  He nodded and she wrapped her arm around mine,
"You just need a girl to help you with that."  She looked over at Brian,
"I'm going to introduce him to a couple of my friends."  Brian shook his head,
"Dude, just don't hate me."  She rolled her eyes,
"Are you trying to say something about my friends?"  He shook his head and held his hands up,
"Nothing I haven't said before."  She shook her head and led me away,
"My friends are great girls, you'll see."  I looked back at Brian one more time and he just shrugged and shook his head as he laughed at me.

We made it over to her friends and I have to admit they are all cute girls, all thin and all probably with as much money as her and her sister.
"Ladies, we have a Backstreet Boy here who is not having fun. Who is going to show Nick a good time?"  They all looked at me as she kept talking,
"Ok Nick, which one do you want?  I'm their pimp."  They all laughed at her and she just giggled and looked up at me,
"No preference?  Ok, well you just hang out here and they'll take care of you.  I have to get back to my man."  And that was that, she just left me.
