Chapter 78

Shayna had just come back from the gym and stepped in the shower when the doorbell rang.  She jumped out of the shower and wrapped a towel around herself as she ran to the door; she looked through the peep hole and saw that it was Nick, alone, and opened the door,
"You look a little busy."  She smiled slightly as she stood to the side and let him in,
"Yeah, I just got back from the gym."  He sat down on the couch, picked up the remote and turned on the television,
"Just make yourself at home."  She shook her head as she looked at him.  He smiled and rolled his eyes at her,
"Smartass."  She laughed lightly, she loved hearing him call her that as strange as it may seem, and walked into the towards the bathroom,
"I'll be out soon."  She stood in the shower and let the water run over her face, knowing she had to face him and the words she said to him over the phone.  She told him she would be with him again, and just him but she hadn't broken it off with Bill.  All she needed was to be with Nick again and it would be ok.  She went to turn off the water and the handle came off in her hand,
"Damn."  Fortunately, she had turned the water off before the handle broke.  She walked out with her towel wrapped securely around her to see him sitting before the TV with two sandwiches, a bag of chips and a Coke.  She smiled,
"You're quite comfortable here huh?  And still have that appetite."  He nodded as he quickly tried to chew and swallow his food,
"Yeah, I was hungry."  She nodded as she went into the bedroom and dressed coming out in a pair of shorts and a T-shirt.  He looked over at her,
"And you talk about me...green shorts and a purple T-shirt?"  She rolled her eyes and smiled,
"I'm not going out in public...you do."  He listened to her call the office and tell them she needed maintenance to fix her shower handle and when she hung up the phone he stood up,
"I can help."  She frowned,
"You don't know nothing about fixing things."  He shook his head and she followed him into the bathroom.  He held the handle and looked at the shower,
"Hey, do you have one of those things you use to turn with?"  She frowned and leaned against the doorway,
"A screwdriver?"  He shook his head,
"No, no.  You grip it and turn knobs and stuff."  She rolled her eyes and laughed,
"Pliers?"  He snapped his fingers,
"Yeah, go get them for me and a hammer and some tape."  She laughed and shook her head,
"A hammer?!  Tape?! Look MacGyver, the maintenance man will be here soon.  Get out.  They probably have to put on a whole new knob."  He shook his head and sighed,
"I could have..."  She tapped him across the back of the head and he took her off guard, turned quickly grabbed her hand and pinned her against the wall.  They locked eyes and he leaned down to kiss her and she held her head down.  He sighed and released her hands; walking back out to the living room and taking a seat on the couch.  She sat down next to him and her eyes focused on the television,
"So what do you want to talk about?"  Her heart began to race as she tried to figure out what to say to him,
"Uh, like I said on the phone last week...I miss you."  His eyes were fixated on a plant in the corner as he ran his hands up and down his thighs,
"I don't know what to say.  Look, I really just need to concentrate on this next album and the tour and..."  She nodded and he looked over to see the tears develop,
"It's not you.  It's just gonna be rough.  You know how the schedule is and trying to start over."  She wiped away a single tear that had escaped,
"We're not starting over.  We were together for a long time.  We can just pick up where we left off.  It's not like we're getting to know each other or I'm new to the whole thing, I know what it's like."  He shook his head,
"You weren't cool with how we left off remember?  That's how we ended up breaking up."  She nooded her head,
"Yeah, you have enough women in your life right now anyway."  He looked over at her and she smiled wryly,
"I've seen the reports on the TV, heard it on the radio, they even had a segment on the radio show with girls calling in telling their stories about you and the other boys but mostly it was about you.  Listening to those stories, everyone knowing I live in this city, you know how I felt?  Like an idiot, everyone knew all these stories except me."  He looked down,
"So Nick, how many times did you cheat on me?"  His head shot up and there was something about the look in her eyes that let him know she knew.
