Till few decades ago talks about pollution and environment were looked upon as a fashion, but all these issues are of great serious concern these days. Predictions are made that human existence would be impossible without proper management of the environment. The human environment is the Earth we live on. The modern man, with all his technical know how, is exploiting natural resources at an alarming rate and in doing so is adversely damaging environment. Man has made tremendous progress in the field of medicine, agriculture, forestry, communications, but these comforts have been achieved at the expense of healthy environment. Thus due to his numerous ecological malpractice, short sightedness, and greedy exploitation of the natural resources, he is confronted today with a number of serious environmental problems. These include desertification of land due to erosion and deforestation, flooding, accumulation of waste and toxic substances in his surroundings, pesticide contamination, radio-isotope accumulation, depletion of natural resources, spread of infectious diseases and so on. There are no simple solutions of these complex problems of our time. Every perceived answer leads to yet another complication. There is a popular maxim that our miseries lie in three Ps that is Population growth, Pollution and Poverty. The last two are directly related to the first one.
As a result our natural resources are depleting at a very rapid rate. We are becoming more and more poor and the pollution is also gradually touching hazardous levels. Poverty has also increased the social evils in our society. These include drug abuse, looting, arson, kidnapping, linguistic riots, unemployment, ethnic clashes etc. The modern man who is spending billions of dollars on the exploration of Mars, Venus and other extraterrestrial space should not forget that, it is the Earth that will decide the future of humanity.
Man and man alone are responsible for the gradual and rapid degradation of the environment on this planet. Thus, the man made problem is to be solved by man himself. Ecologists have suggested numerous measures to minimize pollution. It is clearly evident that the so-called ecological crisis has been blown up way out of proportion. The environmental crisis is local,
National and international and would have to be attacked by governments and individuals at all levels. Time is vital and it is not possible to change the environment, or in other words, conditions of the society or population, overnight. Sense of social obligation carried the prime importance and thus public intervention is necessary. This means that the public authority of the world community must tackle problems of the economies, social or cultural character which posed for the Universal common good. For, because of the vastness, complexity and urgency of these problems, the public authorities of the individual states are not in the position to tackle them in any hope of a positive solution. It thus becomes the prime duty of the teachers and the parents to share this responsibility to create awareness about pollution and environment among the pillars of our nation. If this awareness is nurtured in the young minds of our next generation, there appears a hope to create a better environment on our planet earth. Let us make an effort to kindle this beacon of hope. Younger generation must be informed to the maximum about the factors creating pollution and also the possible methods of minimizing it.
Gopec intends to spread the word among the younger generation and make sure that the next generations to come should be aware of the problems, which are surrounding them. They should be fully equipped knowledgeably to know how to protect themselves and not to do what their ancestors did.
