Journalism Methods

Journalism Methods consisted of two parts. The first half of the quarter we did classroom exercises such as getting a bunch of facts and quotes and turning them into a story or conducting mock interviews with the teacher as the source. The second part of the quarter we got to act like real live journalists. There were four classrooms and each class was assigned a North Chicago suburb. Each person in the class was then assigned a particular beat, such as Police and Fire or Courts. My class got Skokie (yes, straight out of The Usual Suspects), and my beat was Immigration and Ethnicity. Three days a week we had to come up with a story idea based on our reporting and turn in a 500-600 word article by 3:30. Overall it was a pretty rewarding experience, and I think I even got some decent articles out of it. I've grouped them by - in my opinion anyway - level of quality and interest, but if you've got some time, feel free to take a look at all of them, they're all worth a read in my humble opinion. And also don't hesitate to give some feedback. Not that I can do much about them for that particular class, but it could be constructive for future endeavors.
