Recipe for Hardtack
   2 cups of flour
    3/4 to 1 cup water
1 tablespoon of Crisco or Lard
    6 pinches of Salt

Mix ingredients together into a stiff batter, knead several times, and spread the dough onto a baking sheet at a thickness of 1/2 inch.  Bake for 30 minutes at 400 degrees.  Remove from oven, cut baked dough into 3-inch squares, and punch four rows of holes with a fork into dough.  Turn dough over, return to the oven and bake another 30 minutes.  Turn oven off, leaving door of oven closed.  Leave the hardtack in the oven until cool
The 37th Virginia actively recruits men and women of color to join in the fun!
