Post Meeting Report

Below are some key topics covered from the Focus Group Discussion at the Otter Tail Building:

-Morris Elementary/High School Level

Bullying
There is a rise in kids and teens getting picked on in and outside of the classrooms. It's affecting the safety of victims of bullies by their education environment, which they too have the right to learn in a safe-undistracted environment.
*Note: There is a current mentoring program (meets every 2nd Tuesday of the month @4:30p at Common Cup; Contact 'Elaine Simonds-Jaradat' on Stevens County Mentoring Program or me at [email protected])" that is on the stages of starting soon!
Prejudices
"topics of differences is not talked about publicly because people (adults/parents) are not comfortable"-Walter Fisher of UofM-Morris: Minority Student Ethnic-Program Diversity Community Coordinator
Adults need to take a stance on this, which needs to be talked about these issues (e.g. racism, homosexuality, or diversity overall) instead of being silenced. Especially they need to "model" (see Teaching with a Multicultural Perspective. ERIC Digest.) this to the youth/kids. (more...importance of learning differnt ethnic cultures)

-College Campus Level

Over Complacency College students get over complacent regarding the safety (e.g. an international student's lab top computer was stolen after leaving it in the Student Center: Study Lounge)
Sexual Assault

-Community Overall

Drugs
Meth has been an increasing problem!
