The Sword of Truth stories all take place in four areas: Westland, the Midlands, D'Hara and the Old World.
Here you can see a map of these four areas and underneath it you can find a short decription of each area.
Westland

Westand is the only area where no magic exists. It was created with this purpose when the First Wizard, Zeddicus Z'ul Zorander, created the boundaries between Westland, the Midlands and D'Hara.
Westland is also the area where Richard Rahl is originally from.
A lack of knowledge about magic (as mentioned earlier), military organisation and knowledge of the rest of the world are quite typical for Westland.

The Midlands

The Midlands actually exist out of a lot of different countries (as the name already suggests). The capital of the Midlands is Aydindrill. In Aydindrill we can find the Wizard's Keep and the Palace of Confessors. It is in this palace where the government is situated.
The leading power of the Midlands is the Mother Confessor (Kahlan Amnell).
In a later stage of the books, the Midlands forge an alliance with D'Hara (their long-time enemy), to resist the forces of Emperor Jagang. This alliance is lead by the leader of D'Hara (Richard Rahl) and the Mother Confessor (Kahlan Amnell).
The Midlands are very well developed in the magic area.

D'Hara

In the beginning of the Sword of Truth books, D'Hara is in fact the enemy. In that time, it is being ruled by Darken Rahl. Under his lead (and that of his father, Panis Rahl) D'Hara turned into an aggressive country, keen on conquering the world. But this all changes when Richard Rahl becomes the new 'Master Rahl'. Under his 'command' D'Hara takes a turn for the best. D'Hara is governed from the People' Palace.
As mentioned in the 'The Midlands' paragraph, D'Hara forges an alliance with the Midlands to resist Jagang's army.
The people of D'Hara have a special bond with their Master Rahl. This bond allows them to track him down anywhere but it also protects them from the powers of a Dreamwalker (like Jagang).
Master Rahl, is supposed to be the 'magic against magic' for the army and people of D'Hara. In return, they are the 'steel against steel'.
D'Hara has the best trained army in the New World, and therefore are the major line of defence against Jagang and his troops.

Together, D'Hara, the Midlands and Westland form the New World.

The Old World

The old World was originally separated from the New World by the Towers of Perdition. But when Richard Rahl took these towers down, he made it possible for Jagang and his Imperial Order to invade the New World. Jagang has already taken over major parts of the Old World and wants to do the same in the New World. This invasion causes D'Hara and the Midlands to forge an alliance against the Imperial Order. A long, difficult battle will be fought over the freedom of the New (and Old) World.
In the Old World we also find the city of Tanimura. Close to this is the Palace of Prophets. This is where the Sisters of Light reside, and train young wizards.
