All 9 Coal Miners Came Out Alive!
Every month I am going to write about a current event. It might be something that happened near by or it might be a news story about science or technology or anything that I think might be interesting. This month I picked to write about the coal miners that were trapped in the mine in western Pennsylvania. It was especially interesting to me because I just learned about coal mining when I went to the Museum of Science and Industry. They told us that one of the most dangerous things to the coal miners is water because it could flood the mine.
That is exactly what happened in the Quecreek Mine in Pennsylvania. The miners dug into an old mine that was full of water. The water came into the chamber where the miners were. The miners were trapped for three days!     They got pulled out one by one. Their families were very happy to see them. They were very lucky that they lived. Some miners are not going to work in the mines any more. It is a very dangerous job!
Outside they were drilling down to try to rescue the miners. It was hard work and the rock was so strong that it broke the drill! They had to get a new drill. Finally after three days they got to the miners. All nine of them were alive!
Science Facts-Rocks and Minerals
2. Metamorphic-rocks that got
This past month I started studying rocks and minerals here are some cool facts.
*Minerals are made of crystals. The crystals form a pattern. Each mineral has its own pattern.
*Some minerals are elements (like gold, silver and diamonds) and other minerals are compounds
(which means they are made of two or more elements.)
changed from even more heat in the earth.
         3. Igneous-rocks made when lava cools.

I am trying to start my own rock and mineral collection. There is lots of information in books at the library.
*Rocks are made from a clump of minerals.
*The three kinds of rocks are:
         1. Sedimentary-made from small pieces of clay, mud and sand that got pushed togehter by pressure and heat.
Monthly Math Challenge
Our whole drive back took 13 hours and 42 minutes. Part of that time was spent at rest stops. We spent 35 minutes at the first stop in the morning, 27 minutes for lunch and one quick stop for
13 minutes. We also stopped for 52 minutes for dinner. How much time did we actually spend in the truck driving?

Good Luck!!
Here is a math problem just for you. It is from our vacation to Chicago. The answer will be in next month's newsletter.
