| Bird Watching | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| I did a lot of bird watching this month. I have 5 seed feeders and three suet feeders in my backyard for the birds. One of the feeders is attached to my bedroom window and the birds come right up to my window and eat! It is really cool to watch them and hear them in the morning and afternoon. When I did the Great Backyard Bird Count this year from February 14 - 17th, I didn't see as many birds or as many different kinds as I did during last year's count. I did some reading and think it might be because we have been having a colder and snowier winter. Plus, some birds left the area in the late summer and fall because we had such a dry summer and there wasn't as much wild food for them. I did see a few new birds this year that I had not seen before. There is a Northern Mockingbird that comes to our backyard every day. It eats the berries from our Juniper bush. I also have four White-throated Sparrows (3 with tan stripes and one with white stripes) that come every day to my window feeder. One day my mom and I saw a Red-bellied Woodpecker on my suet feeder. It was much bigger than the Downy Woodpecker that comes every day. By the end of the month, some of the spring birds were starting to arrive. I have seen lots of Robins, a few Yellow-rumped Warblers, two American Goldfinches and for the last few days, I have had more and more Cedar Waxwings. The most we have seen is 24!! They are really cool looking birds and they also eat the Juniper berries. |

| Here's a snowy problem: In the last snow storm we had, I took a pitcher with 9 inches of snow and it melted to 2 1/4 inches of water. If we had 22 inches of snow, how much water(rain) would we have gotten if it had been warmer? |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Answer to January Monthly Math Challenge: If we had 29 snowballs, the four of us would each get 7 snowballs and there would be one left over. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| This isn't too hard, but it's fun. Sit on the ground with your back and head flat against the wall. Put your legs straight out and put your hands on your lap. Keep your hands on your legs and your back and head against the wall. Now try to stand up! | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
