Current Event: Alaskan Earthquakes
In November there were over 100 earthquakes in Alaska. People didn't feel all of them because some of them were small. But some of them were so big that you didn't have to be sitting right where the earthquake was to feel it. I wanted to find out what it was like to be in an earthquake, so I interviewed my friend, Emily M., who lives in Alaska.
The biggest earthquake had a magnitude (size) 7.9, it was 86 miles away from her house and she felt it for 45 seconds. She was watching TV when the earthquake started. She didn't think it was anything, but her mom told her it was an earthquake. Emily wanted to gather her animals. She said she was scared because the house was rumbling and shaking and it never seemed like it would end. She said it sounded a little bit like an elephant stomping and it felt like she was standing up in a roller coaster. It shook so much that things fell off the walls. When the earthquake ended there were cracks in some highways in Alaska, but there were no cracks in the ground near Emily's house.
Emily sent me some good advice about what to do in an earthquake.
          1. Try to go into a clear area outside with no trees or power lines.
          2. If you can't do that, get under a table or stoop in a doorway with your arms and hands over your head.
I hope there are no more big earthquakes in Alaska or anywhere else in the United States. I want to thank Emily for letting me interview her and giving good advice.

My Favorite Season
Snowflakes flutter lightly to the ground and I know my favorite season is here. There are lots of fun things to do in winter. It is fun to play in the snow. I like to build snowmen and have a snowball fight with my mom. After playing outside it's nice to have some hot chocolate or tea. At the end of the day, I love snuggling under the covers all cozy and warm. I really love winter and I am so glad that it's here!
Monthly Math Challenge
Since we are in the twelve days of Christmas, here's the challenge:

"On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me a Partridge in a pear tree. On the second day..." The true love gave
a lot of birds. At the end of the twelve days of Christmas, how many birds were there?

If you need help remembering the song, look below

P.E. Challenge

Take a hoola hoop or make a small circle (about 2 -3 feet across) with some string. Get a ping pong ball and paddle and stand in the middle of the circle. How many times can you paddle the ball in one minute without coming out of the circle. If you miss or step out of the circle, you have to start counting again, but the minute keeps going! Can you make it to 20? Anybody that can do it more?
If you don't have a ping pong ball and paddle, try it with a balloon and your hand.
