July 4, 1776
It was a hot day in Philadelphia that July in 1776. My cousins knocked at my door. They wanted to know if I wanted to go with them to get a leather strap for their carriage. I went and asked my mom if I could go with them. After my mom said yes, I ran to the front door to go with them.
As we walked down the street we saw someone moving in down the street. We were so interested that we accidentally bumped into Thomas Jefferson and General George Washington. We knew they were in town to work on a paper for our independence from England.
"Excuse me. I'm sorry," I said quickly.
They had been inside talking all day. They said they were outside because it was such a hot day and everybody was outside to get fresh air.
Mr Jefferson said, "This is an important day, children! We just signed the Declaration of Independence. We're going to read the Declaration on July 8th. Tell your parents to be at the Town Hall at 7:00PM."
"O.K.!" we said. We rushed back home forgetting the leather strap.
I'll never forget that Fourth of July when we bumped into General Washington and Mr. Jefferson. I went with my family to hear the Declaration and they rang the Independence bell on July 8th. We weren't a new country yet, but we were on our way!
I wrote this story after visiting Philadelphia with my cousins, Trevor, Brayden, Breanna and Courtney on July 6, 2002.We stood in a long line to see the Liberty Bell. They told us that "Liberty Bell" was not its original name. We walked to Independence Hall where the Continental Congress met to sign the Declaration of Independence. Here's a picture of all of us in front of the Liberty Bell and "meeting" George Washington at Independence Hall.
