Science - Inclined Planes
Did you know that a ramp is a machine? I didn't until I started learning about machines in science. A ramp is a simple machine called an inclined plane. It is a machine because it makes work easier!

I did a few experiments with ramps. When you are trying to push something uphill, it is easier to use a long ramp with a big angle. You use less force to push it even though you are moving a longer distance. If you use a short, steep ramp, you have to use more force.

On the other hand, if you want to roll something down a ramp and make it go far, it is better to have a high ramp with a small angle. I rolled a car down 2 ramps. One was 12 1/2 inches high and one was 5 inches. Both ramps were 24 inches long. There was more force pulling the ramp down the 12 1/2 inch high ramp and the car rolled farther than on the 5 inch ramp.

Try out some ramp experiments at home. They are easy and fun.
Current Event - Antiques Stolen in Iraq
People are stealing art and antiques from the museums in Baghdad, Iraq. Right after the U.S. invaded Baghdad, there was no government or police in Baghdad. People started stealing things from the palaces and museums in the city. Some of the people who stole things were probably art thieves because they knew what things were valuable. Some of the things that were taken included artifacts of the first writing and things that are 10,000 years old! The robbers may be able to sell the valuable things that they stole.
Some of the religious leaders in Iraq have asked their followers to give back the things that have been stolen. Many things have been returned. These things are important to the history of Iraq, but they are also important to everyone because they help us understand about the first civilizations.
Monthly Math Challenge
Find all the combinations!

    Bob has one
blue baseball cap, one red baseball cap, a black shirt, a white shirt and a striped shirt, a pair of jeans and a pair of sweatpants. If he wants to wear one hat, one shirt and one pair of pants every day, how many different outfits can he make?
Answer to March Math Challenge:
Last month the challenge was to divide this drawing into 4 equal shapes(same size and shape) using exactly 4 straight lines. Did you do it? See the bottom of this page for the answer.
P.E. Challenge
Try jump roping for 90 seconds without stopping! If you're like me and keep missing, try jump roping for ten seconds. Then take a little rest and start jump roping again! Do this until you can jump rope for 90 seconds.
ANSWER TO MARCH CHALLENGE
The four lines are drawn in green, blue, orange and purple. It makes four more 4-sided figures. This was tricky! Did you try for a long time (like I did) to try and draw triangles?
