Current Event: NASA Lands on Mars!
The year has started relatively calm, but it's still been fun. The most exciting was getting ready for the Pinewood Derby for Cub Scouts! My Webelos den hosted a Pinewood Derby Car Building activity. A lot of the other scouts came and brought their tools too. I was one of the last kids still sanding my car. Finally the day of the Pinewood Derby arrived. My car raced great. I won first place in my Webelos den and made it into the finals! I had a great time.
One of the other exciting things this month was that I got to go with my dad and friend to a library where the authors
Kay Winters, Wendy Pfeffer, Pam Swallow, Pat Brisson, Deborah Heiligman, and Joyce McDonald talked about how they get all their story ideas and how they got published. I took notes on some of the interesting things they said. After the authors were done with their presentation I got to talk to Kay Winters. She answered some of my questions and she was very nice.
In school I'm studying a lot of interesting things. In science I've been studying electricity. I've learned how to light up a light bulb with a battery and switch.  In math I've been studying geometry and angles. I'm also reviewing fractions.
We celebrated Chinese New Year at our house. We ate Chinese food and we listened to some traditional music. We also followed another tradition by writing good luck sayings on red paper and putting them on all the doors in our house.
I've also been really following all the news on the Mars Rovers. It's been exciting to see all the pictures from Mars. Make sure to check out my Current Event article about the  rovers.
As usual, you can sign my guestbook from the link below.Click on "view guestbook" then on the guestbook page, click on the "post" button!
It sure was a cold month. I know it's just a superstition, but I hope that the groundhog doesn't see his shadow!

Hope you had a great start to the New Year!

Gabrielle's Grab Bag
Even though it's not Christmas, Gabrielle got another great thing: her own window seat with book shelves! My dad and I built it together. She says she loves it because she can look out the window while she reads.
Gabrielle liked watching me race in the Pinewood Derby, but she really loved racing her cheese car. It really looks like a piece of cheese! She helped sand it.
Gabrielle also really likes to practice writing. She likes to write her numbers and letters and asks other people how to spell words so she can write them.
Gabrielle loves cheetahs, tigers, and lions, and sometimes pretends that she's a little baby tiger. She crawls around the house, roars, and tries to lick everyone! She picked out the pictures for her grab bag this month.
