A brief description of each character and a few key facts about them.
INSPECTOR JAVERT
1768 - 1833

Description:
"It would have been hard to find a figure who looked less prepossessing. He was thick-set of medium build, stout and hardy, in his full maturity; he might have been forty-six or forty-seven... His hair was shorn, but bristly... The sweat, the heat, his long walk, and the dust, added an indescribably sordid quality to his tattered appearance."

Bio:
Jean Valjean was born in Favrolles, and was a pruner there for the first half of his life. He lived with his sister and her seven children, and was the only source of income for nine people. When the children began to starve, he stole a loaf of bread. But he was captured and sent to the prison gelleys in Toulon. He tried to escape four times, and so ended up staying in prison for nineteen years. When he finally was released, he stole silver from the Bishop of Digne, but the Bishop let him go. He became the rich and saintly Mayor of Montreuil-sur-Mer, but was discovered to be a convict, and fled with Cosette to Paris. Nine years later, when he discovered Cosette's love for Marius, he went to the barricades to save the boy. After their wedding, happy and content, he died.
