These photographs are from the first Ruby Mountain Balloon Festival. That first year, the balloons lifted off from a city park, barely a block from our house. So of course, we had to get up in the predawn hours and go watch the balloons being unpacked and filled, before the dawn liftoff.
It was pretty cool. Every year since, the balloon launches have been from Spring Creek, on the other side of the hill from town. Maybe it has something to do with all those balloons drifting around in people's backyards!
It's still a fairly new event, but it's growing in size each year. If so-inclined, some of the balloonists give rides, for a fee. |

Oh, yeah. Oktoberfest. I don't have to explain that, do I? It's a fundraising event for the Ruby Mountain Symphony Orchestra. We have an orchestra. They give two concerts each year, with local and 'imported' (from Reno, generally) musicians. One year I remember the theme was musical comedy and theatre music, and our mayor, Mike F., dressed up in comic opera costume and sang songs from HMS Pinafore... |
