King Cold, Frieza's father, finds Frieza's body parts in the ruins of Namek. With cybernetics, Frieza's body is rebuilt. The cybernetics raises Frieza's power level to twice that of what it was before. Together they plot a course for Earth to have their revenge on Goku. All of the Z fighters sense Friez'a coming. They all gather to fight Frieza. But someone else makes it to Frieza. Instead of finding Goku, Frieza is encountered by a mysterious youth who quickly kills his henchmen. The youth claims to be a Super Saiyan stronger than that of Goku, but neither King Cold or Frieza believe him. But he holds up to his claim and becomes a Super Saiyan. He toys with Frieza at first but then kills him with ease by slicing Frieza into many pieces with his sword. He and King Cold talk a while, and the king claims that the youth couldn't beat him wihtout the sword. He borrows the sword from the youth and tries to kill him with it, but the youth catches the sword and blasts a hole thorugh King Cold. Then he blasts the king into the next dimension. The Z fighters arrive and try to soak in what happened. Instead of getting answers the youth leads them to an area where he says Goku will land. They stubbornly follow him and Goku arrives in the exact place at the exact time that the youth had predicted. Everyone was baffled. The youth talks to Goku in private and reveals that he is Trunks, from the future. He says that in three years two androids will rise and destroy most of the population of Earth. Goku is shocked to hear that everyone dies in the first fight but Gohan. He says that there are no dragonballs because Piccolo is dead. What gets Goku the most is the fact that he dies before the androids arrive due to a deadly heart virus that had no cure at the time. At that being said, Trunks hands Goku some medicine for the virus that he says was invented after his death. Trunks then goes back to the future and the Z fighters train for 3 years. It came the day when the androids were supposed to rise, so the Z fighters went to the city that Trunks said they would first appear. But they couldn't sense their power levels, so they all split up to search for them. Yamcha runs into the androids, Android 19 a clown and Android 20 an old guy. Android 19 absorbs Yamchas energy and the other Z fighters hurry to aid him. Goku gives Yamcha a sensu bean and tells the androids to fight where there aren't any people. So Android 20 gets smart and blows up half of the city. Gooku stops him and they fly to a lone island. There Goku fights Android 19. After a while beating up Android 19, Goku fires a Kamehameha wave and Android 19 absorbs it, regaining his power. At that moment Piccolo notices that Goku has finally caught the heart virus. Vegeta shows up and gets Goku out of the mess and Yamcha helps Goku fly to Master Roshi's island. Vegeta surprises everyone by turning Super Saiyan and allows Android 10 to absorb his energy. While Android 19 is absorbing his energy, Vegeta breaks off the androids hands and blasts him to the next dimension. Piccolo persuades Vegeta to let him handle Android 20, and he begins to beat on the android. Trunks shows up from the future to see what has happened and is frightened at the first sight of the battle, he thinks he was too late. But he finds the battle and hurries to their location. But when he gets there he announces that they aren't the androids he was talking about, his androids were a brother-sister couple. Android 20 then reveals that he is Dr. Gero and he runs off to his secret lab. The Z fighters try to follow him the best they could, and they eventually find his lab. They blast the door down and find Android 20 bringing Androids 17 and 18 out of stasis. Android 17 then rebels against the doctor and kicks his head off. Androids 17 and 18 destroy most of the lab and then they bring Android 16 out of stasis. The Z fighters fight the androids and lose badly. Trunks breaks his sword trying to slice Android 18. When Piccolo regains consciousness he flies off to Kame's Lookout where he and Kame become one entity again. He flies down to a city where the population mysteriously vanished. There he finds another android. This android claims to have killed Trunks in the future and come to this time to fulfill his sole purpose, to absorb Androids 17 and 18, and become perfect. This android is known as Cell. He is made from the combination of the Cells of all the Z fighters and their foes until Frieza. Piccolo fights him and loses. In the meantime Trunks and Vegeta enter the hyperbolic time chamber to train. 1 year in the chamber is equal to one day on Earth. After Cell defeats Piccolo he flies off to find the androids. Piccolo and some of the Z fighters return to Dr. Gero's laboratory and find a secret basement where they find the Cell of the present stuck in a test tube. They kill the Cell of the present and Piccolo searches for Androids 16, 17, and 18. Piccolo runs into the androids before Cell does and he fights them. They are baffled as to how he became so much stronger. He starts to win when Cell arrives. He defeats Piccolo again and Tien comes and hides out. Cell then fights Android 16 and rips his tail off, but the Piccolo part of Cell has him regenerate it. Cell burrows into the ground and resurfaces behind Android 17, and he absorbs him through his tail. Cell mutates into a stronger, faster being. He easily defeats and wounds Android 16, then Tien stepped in to give the androids time to escape. After a while, Tien runs out of energy and is badly beaten. Goku uses his Instant Transmission technique to go to where Tien is, he grabs Tien, and teleports back to Kame's Lookout just before Cell could deal the finishing blow. Cell flies off to locate the androids and starts destroying island after island to lure them out. At the same time, Vegeta and Trunks come out of the hyperbolic time chamber and rush to where Cell is, while Goku and Gohan go into the chamber to train. Unlike the other androids, Cell's signature can be detected. The last island left in the archipelago is the location of the androids, and Cell knows it. But when he was searching for the androids, he comes across Trunks and Vegeta. Krillin soon arrives with a remote control that was built by Bulma to shut down Android 18. While Vegeta is easily beating Cell, Krillin has a hard time trying to shut down Android 18. He then throws the remote on the ground and crushes it. On the other side of the island Cell persuades Vegeta to allow him to absorb Android 18 in order to have the fight of a lifetime. So he absorbds Android 18 and mutates into Perfect Cell. He whups on Vegeta and Vegeta finishes off by introducing his Final Flash technique. It was no match for Cell. Trunks steps in and powers up to his max while Vegeta retreats. His muscles bulge and he begins to fight Cell. Cell tells him that bulky muscles is hindering his speed, so he can't lay a punch on Cell. Cell spares Trunks life and tells him about the Cell Games, then he flies off. The other Z fighters find Trunks and he tells them about the Cell Games. Cell gave them 9 days to train. While in the time chamber, Goku is able to train Gohan to Super Saiyan and they train their bodies to permanently stay Super Saiyans. After they leave the chamber, Vegeta enters back inside, and Goku and Gohan take the training easy. To their astonishment, Chi Chi allows Gohan to fight in the tournament. Also, a new character is introduced who becomes important later in the series, Hercule Satin. He is the World Martial Arts champion. The day comes for the Cell Games and Hercule and his two companions fight Cell first and aren't even worthy of a challenge. Goku steps in and they fight and fight and fight. Towards the end, Goku is running low on energy and Cell still has most of his. During the fight Vegeta makes a famous speech to Trunks praising Goku for the first time. Goku recedes from the fight and puts Gohan in his place. Cell finds out about Gohans hidden powers and he takes steps to force them out. During the process, Gohan gets beaten up pretty badly. While Gohan is getting killed, Goku is oblivious to the truth. Everyone is trying to get him to help Gohan but he refuses. Finally he realizes the facts and just when he is about to interfere in the fight, Android 16 jumps onto Cells back and attempts to Self-Destruct. But he can't because when Bulma and Dr. Brief were repairing him, they took out his bomb. So Cell blasts Android 16 to pieces. When he sees Gohan's reaction to this, he decides to take a new approach towards drawing out Gohan's hidden powers. Cell makes 7 Cell Jr's and sends them to fight the Z fighters. Soon most of them are badly injured. Only Vegeta and Trunks can defend themselves, but barely. Cell then gives the Cell Jr.s permission to kill the fighters, and Gohan gets angry, but still no powers. At the same time, the head of Android 16 is able to persuade Hercule to throw his head close to Gohan. Hercule does as the head asks him to, and Android 16 revealed how Gohan would be able to unleash his hidden powers. When he finishes his speech, Cell walks up and crushes Android 16's head, killing him for good. Gohan can't take the loss. With extreme rage, he erupts with extreme anger. His muscles bulge, and at first Cell thinks he's doing the same thing that Trunks did, but then his power rises dramatically. Gohan has transformed into a Super Saiyan 2. When the smoke clears, Gohan kills all of the Cell Jr.s with one punch each. Cell gets angry and assaults Gohan, but Gohan dodges them as if they are nothing. Cell, jealous of Gohan's power, decides to finish the games once and for all. He powers up the biggest Kamehameha ever and shoots it at the Earth and Gohan, in hopes of destroying it. But size doesn't matter, Gohan powers a small Kamehameha of his own that is powerful enought to send Cell's hurtling back at him. Cell can't dodge the blast and is hit. Cell is literally half the man he used to be, but he regenerates the missing parts. Goku, annoyed by Gohan toying with Cell, orders Gohan to hurry up and finish the fight, but he refuses. Cell falls back to the ground and powers up, increasing his size. He tries another assault on Gohan and still Gohan dodges the blows, then Gohan punches Cell in the gut. This causes Cell to mutate back to his second form. In a last ditch effort to win the Cell Games, Cell attempts to Self-Destruct. Gohan doesn't dare hit him, for it is very likely that Cell will explode prematurely with any shock, the blast would still be strong enough to destroy the planet. Cell has won the games, and Gohan blames himself for allowing things to come to this. In the last few seconds before Cell explodes, Goku has a change in attitude. He says farewell to everyone and he teleports to where Gohan is. There he tells Gohan how proud he is of him, and that he wants him to look after Chi Chi. Gohan is confused at what Goku was saying. Then Goku says his final good-bye to Gohan and he uses the Instant Transmission to teleport he and Cell to King Kaio's planet where Cell explodes. The Earth is safe, but it cost the Z fighters dearly. They mourn for Goku's sacrifice, Gohan and Krillin take it the hardest. Meanwhile Bubbles, Gregory, King Kaio, and Goku are dead and wandering Snake Way when they realize that Cell is not with them...He is still alive! Back on Earth the Z fighters are about to leave when Cell reappears in his final form. On cell had survived and had regenerated back into Cell's final form, but he is stronger than before...he is Ultra Perfect. He shoots a laser at the Z fighters, killing Trunks, and after all the time he spent with Vegeta, Vegeta finally accepts him as his son. In anger Vegeta attacks Cell, but is easily defeated. Right when Cell fires the finishing blast at Vegeta, Gohan steps in the way. He saves Vegeta's life, but in doing so he loses all function in his left arm. Cell then shoots a Kamehameha wave at Gohan to finish him off. Gohan is down, but Goku cheers him up and gives him motivation. His spirit performs the Kamehameha with Gohan, and he and Cell have a stand off with the energy blasts, gradually raising the power used in the blasts. Finally GOhan puts everything he has into a final blast and it kills Cell for good. Afterwards, Gohan goes unconscious due to the stress of transforming Super Saiyan 2. Hercule takes all the credit for killing Cell and becomes a worldwide hero. Also Dende, the new guardian of the Earth since Kame had fused with Piccolo, created a new set of dragonballs that allows 2 wishes instead of 1. They first wish back everyone killed by Cell. Their second wish is to revive Goku, but he refuses because he believes that all that troubles that had befallen them had been indirectly caused by Goku and his actions, that is when Krillin announces his crush for Android 18 when he tries to make her human, but that wish doesn't work either. So Goku stayed in Other World to do the Earth a favor. Trunks, who was revived by the first wish, travels back to the future where he transforms to Super Saiyan 2 and kills Androids 17 and 18 as well as the Cell of his time.
