THE WORST... by Paul Hooper

The worst bombing raid?

We all know about Burnside and his ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, but I have been doing a little research into other military exploits and below are a couple of offerings. I think I have the worst examples, but if you know better then scribble them out.

I have two contenders for this:

1. 22nd Feb 1940, a Heinkel 111 flying off the coast of Borkum sighted two destroyers. In a bout of sustained aggression it strafed and bombed the cornered vessels. Rarely has one plane caused so much damage. The two destroyers the Lebrecht Maass and the Max Schulz both belonged to the German Navy.

2. As the complete opposite, the Peruvian Airforce celebrated Air Force Week in 1975 by casting adrift fourteen ramshackle fishing vessels. Thirty Peruvian Fighters flew over the fishing boats droping some 120 bombs and then proceeded to straf them for a further fifteen minutes. When the smoke had cleared it was discovered that they had failed to sink a single vessel. To add insult to injury when the fighters landed two of them taxied into each other and wrote both fighters off!

Can you come up with a bombing raid that beats either of the above?
