Part Three
The pair arrived at the Van De Kamp residence in separate cars, knowing that they would be separated on this case eventually. Fortunately, when they arrived, there were no other agents to dodge. They must have completed their investigation earlier.
There are no bodies Mulder observed when they entered the house
They were probably taken for an autopsy
Probably Mulder said, not necessarily agreeing.
Scully collected a blood sample while Mulder went into what looked like an infants bedroom. What would anybody, monster or otherwise, want with a young infant, Mulder silently wondered. He tried not to think about William. And to disregard the theory that was forming in his mind; that this was the work of a monster that needed infants in order to survive somehow, and that William could also be in danger. Scully was probably right, he told himself, perhaps the Van De Kamps were fame mongers who staged this to get into the tabloids. Mulder decided not to tell Scully his theory yet. He knew he would need more proof than what he had to convince her. He just hoped that what he would find would disprove his theory.

When Scully had collected samples from each pool of blood; one from Mr and one from Mrs Van De Kamp, she assumed, she was about to follow Mulder when something caught her eye. She looked at a shelf and saw a photo of a baby no more than a year old. But this particular baby was very familiar to her. It was her baby. But perhaps she was mistaken. She walked towards the picture and took it off the shelf to get a better look. At that moment, Mulder emerged from the room nearby.
I think we should go question the Van De Kamps neighbours, the ones who found the bodies
Scully nodded her agreement yeah, you should do that, but I wanted to see if I could find the Van De Kamps bodies. I also wanted to check out this blood
Alright, well, Ill meet you at our spot tonight?
Scully nodded, and they both headed towards their cars and drove to their respective destinations.

Their spot was the park bench that they had met at numerous times before. They had to be so careful now. Careful not to say aloud where they were going. Careful to be ready to flee at the first sign of danger. They were being targeted now, by the super soldiers, by other aliens, by the military. Actually, Mulder was the target, and Scully would only continue to be one as long as she associated with Mulder. Of course, after all they had been through together, Scully would never consider thinking about abandoning him. She had gotten a taste of what life had been like without him, and it was excruciating. She would still love to have a normal life some day, but only if it was with Mulder.

Scullys thoughts were on William for the entire car trip. What if it was him in the photograph? What if it had been the Van De Kamps who had adopted him? Who would have kidnapped him? What if they knew what he was? What would they do to him? It had taken until she reached the FBI research facility for her usual rationality to kick in. Perhaps she was imagining seeing William in the photograph. She missed him so much, and knew that after the loss of a loved one, it was very common to see them where they werent. Scully cautiously snuck into the facility. The Van De Kamps lived so far away that by the time Scully had been there and back, it was after office hours and there was no one in sight. She was still aware of the surveillance videos, however, and was ready to bolt if anyone came. She was planing to be long gone before anyone saw the surveillance tapes anyway.

Scully ran the blood samples through the computer, and they belonged to who she had suspected. Then she searched on the internet for anything that the Van De Kamps had signed. She knew exactly what she was looking for, and, to her disappointment, she found it. An adoption certificate. The Van De Kamps son had been adopted. She forced herself to remain hopeful. How many infants had been adopted over the past few weeks? She took out the photo that she had taken from the crime scene and guessed that only one of them looked this much like William.
