Part Thirteen
Alice McDonald removed her yellow rubber gloves and emptied the sink drain. She opened the oven and checked on her meatloaf. About one more hour should do it. She closed the oven and the doorbell rang.

Scully waited at the door. She hoped that Mulder was having more luck than her. The man she had spoken to earlier had not been of any help. She silently prayed that whoever lived here knew something anything.

Mrs McDonald opened the door to see a professionally dressed woman with red hair.
Can I help you?
I hope so. Scully replied, showing her badge. Im agent Scully, and I was wondering if you might know anything about the Van De Kamps and their son. Did you know them very well?
Mrs McDonald gestured for agent Scully to come inside and take a seat. Jenny was my closest friend
Im very sorry for your loss Scully said, though she grew hopeful.
Mrs McDonald continued But when she adopted that baby
You lost touch with her? Mrs McDonald nodded. Why?
There was something wrong with that boy. I dont know what, but I knew I didnt want anything to do with it. I read that Jenny and Tim were killed by a monster. I wouldnt be surprised if it was their own son.
What happened, Scully asked breathlessly, to make you think he was a monster? She cleared her throat in an effort to hide how defensive she was growing. I mean, what sort of things did he do?
Well, the first sign was when I was holding him a few weeks after they adopted him. He spit up on me, but it wasnt normal spit up. It was sorta metallic, silvery. I didnt think much of it at the time, but then later I put him down into his crib, and the mobile above it started spinning! I thought maybe there was a gust of wind or something, but the window was closed! Now you tell me thats not strange
She was right Scully said to herself, thinking about the substance that Jeffery Spender injected William with, and what Rodgers said. It didnt work
what?
Nothing. Go on, anything else?
I told Jenny that she had a demon child, but she wouldnt listen. I havent seen her since, but I heard on the grape vine that the kid started moving other things as well.
Scully got the distinct impression that this woman was very familiar with the art of gossiping by the way she seemed to instinctively lean in and drop her voice to a whisper although there was no one in the room. Scully had to move in as well to hear her. Apparently, a few days ago, Jenny was trying to get William to take his first steps. The kid loves sunflower seeds (which is another strange thing) so Jenny was using them to encourage him over to her. Instead, he made the sunflower seeds float over to him! Mrs McDonald waited for a reaction from Scully.
Wow that is unusual. She said, with fake surprise. But from what youve told me, William has exhibited nothing to indicate hes a demon. Telekinesis certainly isnt a manifestation of demonism. Nor have you mentioned anything about the presence of horns, the ability to invade others dreams, elliptically shaped eyes or an overly red pigment Scully stopped when she noticed Mrs McDonalds puzzled expression.
Okay Mrs McDonald said uneasily. Alright, so what is he?
Hes Scully thought for a moment, giving the only answer she knew for sure. Hes a miracle
A miracle? Hes a demon if you ask me.
Scully sighed And you have no idea where he might be?
No, sorry I couldnt have been more help
Well, thank you for your time She hoped that Mulder was having more luck than her.
