Maureen Jacobson
is a celebrated photographer and Los Angeles native who studied photography
and film at San Francisco State University. Her ambition is not so much
a desire to reflect reality, as it is a need to be understood.
To her the facts are not important, the ideas are. The subject isn't
the focus, but rather the print. When the viewer sees through her
eyes then she is satisfied with the task at hand. Ansel Adams once
said. "Twelve photographs that matter in a year is a good crop
for any photographer." With these images she offers to us a collection
of 12 epiphanies in her confrontation of Los Angeles architecture, elements,
and moods in a contemplative body of work called Reflections. That
which you see in the final print is there for all to see. Viewers feel obliged
to pause and peer closely into the dense but articulate shadows of her
pictures and are forced to ask, "Why didn't I see that?" There's no
double exposures or sandwiching of images. The work is done through traditional
means of a 35mm camera and Cibachrome printing. Twisted and distorted
in reality, this isn't an exercise in the grotesque or digital trickery.
Her images are haunting, beautiful and pure. |

| Venus Flexing is a title I used when
I first began producing works of a thematic nature. It implies the
growing strength of women entering fields once closed to them.
Law. Legislative bodies. Medicine (as doctors). Etc. Many of the women
who work for me are professionals in several fields. Teachers, physicians,
psychotherapists, mathematicians, law enforcement, etc. As many are
in the mainstream as executives, retail clerks, office personnel, etc.
Their remarkable quality has been transferred onto visual display in
our combined creations. I changed the name to Ordinary Women when it
occured to me the majority, if not all those who sat for me, were possessed
with this desire to express themselves and had the creative acumen to
do so. All my art is imbued with their personality and character.
I use mythological themes a great deal. It is a means to open a door into what I feel exists in today’s woman. Their innate sense of wisdom, intelligence and spiritual values transcending that of man’s. Who is more ruled by dogmatic considerations rather than an open awareness of humanity for the sake of humanity. These works are photographs taken by me in black and white, processed and printed in the darkroom. Then I, using black and white chemical and light techniques create images I call Chaos which changes the character of the original print. After which the works are blown up and handpainted. These are not digitally produced. I have been in the darkroom for over 50 years. There are more than a few of my “cohorts” who have worked with me who facetiously state I am still in the dark. Odd, they never finish the word. |
