New Jersey passenger plates utilized a smaller, stacked "2-alpha" coding to indicate
county of origin.
The "shorter" plate used 3 characters after the county
code,
either 3 numeric, then when combinations exhausted, going to 2-numeric 1-alpha.
The "longer" plate used 4
characters.
The colors were buff (or white, as some sources indicate) on black on all 1951 NJ plates.
Differences in
appearances here are due to fading/photography/scanning and plain old age.
