It all began in the Fall of 2001. We cut down some trees and decided to use some of them for a tree house. Here is the tree house crew. On the left is Jonathan. Center right is Adam and in the chair is Cody.
Instead of actually putting the house in a tree. We decided to put it on posts, with a tree going through the center. The question is, is this still a tree house? We began construction in the winter of 2001-2002. The site we chose was high up on our property so we could have a view. It was also close enough to the pump house, to run an extension cord for power tools.
The site is close enough to the house, that it only takes a short hike to reach, yet it is far enough away to make it inconvenient to just "stop by", this in my opinion is an important aspect of tree house placement.

We used mostly second hand materials. The walls were framed by ripping used 2x6s in half to save lumber and weight. The framing went slowly. Working off the ground, and with a tree in the center of your structure adds many complexities! The boys were a great help and we created lifetime memories during this project.

We got some free metal roofing from someone who was reroofing an old garage. We cleaned and painted it. We put the nailing strips on the roof to line up with the old nail holes to minimize patching. Going around the tree was a challenge. We sealed the opening by cutting a truck inner tube and fabricating a "boot". The windows and sliding glass door, were again, discards from other projects.
