| Starter: Starters contain a glow switch and a capacitor, enclosed in a canister with a baseplate with brass contact pins. Glow switch: What is a Glow Switch ? Glow switch (glass vacuum activator) is a small low pressure helium mixture filled lamp containing a fixed contact and bimetallic strip. Working of a Glow Switch When live switch is closed, the full line voltage appears across the glow switch, ionizing the gas inside and establishing a glow discharge, which then heats the bimetallic strip, causing it to expand in such a way so as to close its contacts. This creates a circuit to flow and pre-heats the FTL electrodes. This current causes a voltage drop across the ballast. The bimetal strip cools and breaks away from fixed contact, producing large back EMF across the inductor, which also appears across the ballast, causing arc to strike. The capacitor in starter: Capacitor Specifications The capacitor is connected electrically in parallel to the glow switch and the fluorescent lamp. Its capacitance is 6kpf for T12-T8 fluorescent lamps and 3.3kpf for CFL's. Functions of the Capacitor The capacitor serves three main functions.
