| OBESITY | ||||||||
| In a dictionary the word obesity is defined as an increase in body weight caused by excessive accumulation of body fat (Dictionary.com). The National Institue of Health's (NIH) definition of obesity is when a male's weight exceeds 20% of the desired maximum weight for his height, and for females if the weight exceeds 25% of the desired maximum weight for her height. Children whose Body Mass Index (BMI) is 25-29.9 are considered overweight, but a BMI of 30 or more is considered to be obese. A common misperception of people who are obese is that they are too "fat." Most children do not appear to be obese because they do not look too "fat,"but they actually may be mildly obese. Parents and some doctors cannot differentiate between being obese and being overweight. A year ago I went to see the nutritionist at the UCI Health Center. I wanted to begin losing weight because I thought I was overweight. When the nutritionist weighed me and measured my height she looked up my BMI and told me I was mildly obese. I went in to see the nutritionist thinking I was just a bit overweight and I found out that I was obese and had to lose at least 35 pounds to be at a healthy weight. I would talk to my doctors and tell them I was concerned with my weight but none of them thought my weight was a seroius problem. I was merely told to exercise and to eat healthy, but none of my doctors gave me good advice, such as a food plan to follow or an exercise routine to do. A possible thought doctors may have is that the excess weight is "baby fat" and it will be shed as the child grows. Undetecting obesity in children can lead to more serious health problems in adulthood. Children who watch too much television are at a higher risk of becoming obese because of the increase in sedentary activity and the exposure to numerous unhealthy food ads. |
