Chapter One
'Ami-chaaaaaaaaan'
Ami stopped dead in her tracks at the high-pitched voice. She clutched her bag harder and scrunched her face up in a sort of pain. Behind her, fast approaching down the hill came the sound of a person running. With a sigh, Ami took one last look at the serene morning blue skies against the gentle pink of an overhead sakura tree, and braced herself. The whirlwind suddenly passed her, then tried to slow itself with quick slapping steps on the pristine sidewalk. This whirlwind quickly turned, her chestnut fringe swung past wide eyes only held back from totally obscuring her view by two small bobble clips. She gave a great big cheery smile and waved slightly
'Ohayogozaimasu Ami-chan' she chirped skipping backwards as Ami approached. 'Ohayo Misaki' Ami replied in a low monotone only offering a tired wave of her hand.
'Aww why so down?' Misaki enquired still smiling. She stopped her skipping to lean in inquisitively and annoyingly towards Ami. Ami ignored her passing by with a sideways glance, why was she always so hyper and this early too, she couldn't help thinking.
'I'm not down' she replied sullenly 'It is a very nice morning I just don't have your morning bounce'
'Oh!' Misaki sighed overdramatically. 'I see' she whispered loudly with a furious nodding of her head. 'Well' she raised her voice once more 'I can't expect everyone to be like me ne?' turning she slapped Ami on the back making the blonde cough. Misaki laughed and with another smile, resumed her skipping down the hill in a wavy style, holding her bag out behind her back. Ami could only grimace, adjusting the white seifuku scarf and straightening the blue cardigan of her school uniform. Grumbling to herself, she followed the fast disappearing Misaki breaking into a run herself.
Misaki hurtled down the road at a breakneck speed, swinging her bag besides her. She hummed to herself as she skipped, doing her level best to destroy the tranquil peace of the suburban morning.
'Ohayogozaimasu Kawamoto-san' she trilled as she passed an old lady sweeping the steps to her home. The lady looked up slowly to mutter 'hmm?' and peering around, saw the disappearing blue shape of Misaki as she continued her skip down the hill.
Misaki was oblivious to all but the wind that whipped around her face causing the two front fringe pieces to fly in front of her face. She gazed up at the sky as she skipped, marvelling at the blue, and as such did not look ahead to the junction where a figure had emerged from around the corner of the next road. This other, a tall girl with bright cherry red hair scraped neatly away from her face, did not notice Misaki either until the last moment. A slight sideways glance, a small gasp and then Misaki collided with her at full pelt sending the other girl and all her books flying. The redhead screamed loudly, angry shocked and in pain.
'Oh! It's you! Can't you even look where you are going?'
Misaki rubbed her smarting head and groaned. She turned to look at the floored girl. She saw the girl lying on her back on the sidewalk and blushed embarrassed
'Uhsumimasen Ryoko' she apologised bowing her head. Grumbling to herself, Ryoko picked herself up from her splayed position and proceeded to dust down her uniform. Frowning she examined her grazed knees and tried to wipe some of the redness away. She heard another sound of fast approaching footsteps, frowned some more and looked up the hill, tucking away a strand of dislodged hair as she did so.
'Is everyone running today?' Ryoko commented dryly as Ami could be seen running haphazardly in pursuit of her friend. Misaki swung her had round from where she stood
'Oh it's Ami-chan' she smiled then turned to Ryoko with a pout. 'I only run when I'm late'
'Hmmph' Ryoko regarded her airily and continued to tidy herself. 'You could at least pick my books up' she remarked pointing at the array of texts that littered the ground.
'Oh sorry' Misaki good-natured as ever went about the task as Ami arrived out of breath.
'What..areyou..doing' she asked panting and holding onto the wall as if for dear life. 'Ryoko' she managed a very limp greeting 'Ohayo' Ami felt as though she could pass out.
'Whatever Ami' Ryoko replied 'Your idiot of a friend knocked me over'
'Oh well she's quite probably sorry. We're a bit late' Ami tried to reason, still desperately regaining her strength.
'Yeah ok.' Ryoko regarded her dismissively 'Have you finished yet' she turned back to the brunette who was busy chasing after flying pieces of paper.
'Hai' Misaki called cheerily, offering Ryoko the pile of neatly stacked books in her arms.
'I don't know why you should be so cheery about it' Ryoko scolded snatching her possessions back. Ami, now recovered, secretly glared at Ryoko and picking up her own bag went to join Misaki.
'It's done now' Ami replied to the redhead.
'Yeah well' Ryoko continued to act offhandedly to Ami, 'Ja' she called out as she turned to continue her own walk to school.
'I told you not to run' Ami reprimanded Misaki. She was met by a simple shrug and a smile
'Nothing big' Misaki grinned 'Everything's fine. It was only a little bump and no real harm has been done'
'How are you so happy always?' Ami deadpanned as they continued their walk at a slower pace and at a good distance from Ryoko.
