Take a walk outside your mind; tell me how it feels to be - the one who turns the knife inside of me. Take a look and you will find - there's nothing there girl yeah I swear. I'm telling you girl, yeah, 'cause there's a hole in my soul that's been killing me forever. It's a place where a garden never grows. There's a hole in my soul, yeah, I should have known better 'Cause your love's like a thorn without a rose." Part Seventeen Hole in my Soul Friday 12th October For autumn the weather was wonderful, warm but with a slight breeze and a blue sky to remind you of summer. Nora felt good, the day had gone well, it was only 6p.m and she was making her way home. Shed walked to work with Jack grabbing coffee from the deli on the way, and hoped theyd return together but she hadnt seen him all afternoon. She didnt blame him; hed won a difficult case that morning that hed been working on for months so she could overlook him sneaking an afternoon off to celebrate. Although shed hoped they would go out for dinner tonight, just the two of them, she always seemed so tired at the moment it would be good to relax with him. She climbed the steps to their apartment, let herself in and took the elevator to their floor. "Hey honey Im home." She called hanging up her coat. "Where have you been all afternoon? Hope I dont have to give you a warning for taking liberties and wasting time!" She found him sitting him on the couch with his head cradled in his hands. "Whats wrong? I thought youd be celebrating." "Couldnt face it." He looked up at her for the first and she could tell hed been crying. "Hell Jack whats wrong, is it Lita, is she ok?" "Shes fine." He swallowed and rubbed his forehead, trying to calm himself. "Its you." "I dont understand." Jack stood up and began pacing. "I went to see Laura today, about the dating and how it affects Lita and well we began to argue, pretty bad. And she took great pleasure in telling me I had no right judge her when my partner was getting groped in some sleazy alleyway." "O god." Nora slipped down into the chair shed been leaning on. "Like some cheap slut." "Dont say that." "Why not? God Nora, in a neighbourhood like that with a stranger whats wrong, is this not exciting enough for you?!" "No, that wasnt it it had nothing to do with excitement, it was just a kiss." "Just a kiss, how the hell would you feel if you found out Id been feeling up some younger woman in a dark alleyway behind a bar. For gods sake Nora you could have been attacked, raped." "I never thought of that." She whispered. "And Im supposed to feel grateful it was just a kiss. He had his hand up your top according to Laura." Noras head was swimming; what had happened that night the reasons for it, how sorry she was, how guilty. She felt dizzy and leant forward resting her head on her knees. "So thats it, no more excuses, apologies. How many other men have you fucked since youve been with me?" Her head shot up again. "I would never." "Oh you wouldnt, and Im supposed to believe you right cos youre the god damn honest as they come DA. If Id known it was an open relationship I could have been screwing around too." Nora crossed the room to him. "Jack please, nothing like that happened, I wouldnt let it." "Oh come on, how do you think I feel finding out Ive been living with a whore?!" She slapped his face hard. "Dont ever speak to me like that. I made a mistake, we all do, hell you certainly have." "So that gives you the right to cheat on me, because I made mistakes before. Or is this revenge for what happened the first time around." "That was years ago, Ive never held that against you, not now." "Then why Nora, for fucks sake why, why, why?" She had never seen him like this, so angry and upset at the same time, kicking furniture as he stomped round the room. She went to him and tried to grab his arms and for a second she thought he might hit her. "Calm down Jack and let me explain what actually happened." He shrugged her off. "Dont touch me." He looked at her disgusted and went into the bedroom. She followed but hed locked the door. She sunk down to the floor leaning against it, listening to him slamming draws in the other room. * * * * * It was over an hour before Jack emerged, and when he did he was carrying a suitcase and an overnight bag. Nora hadnt cried yet but when she saw this the tears came. "Where are you going?" "To see if I can crash at Lennies, until I get a place." "Youre leaving me?" "What do you think." He grabbed his coat and went to the door, but Nora pushed in front of him. "Jack you just cant walk out, we havent even talked about it, you havent listened to me." "Why should I?" "Because youre being irrational." "And if I have time to think Ill change my mind I dont think so. I trusted you." "You can trust me, I would never mean to hurt you." "Then why have you?" She tried to control her crying but only resulted in gasping for breath. "Please dont leave, I need you." "No you dont, not really." And with that he slammed the door and was gone. * * * * * Part 16 Stories Part 18 |
