Glenbeigh Legends

Gerry Riordan

Gerry Riordan was born in Letter, Glenbeigh, in 1939. His football career lasted for twenty years during which he met with varying success, the highlight of which was winning an All Ireland senior medal in 1962. He also won a Munster Minor medal in 1957, and Munster Junior medals in 1961 and 1965. He won a National League medal and a Munster Senior Championship medal in 1963.

In 1954 Gerry won a Munster Technical Schools Championship medal with Kerry, representing Killorglin Technical School. He helped Mid Kerry win it's first Senior County Championship in 1967, and was a stalwart on the Glenbeigh teams that won Mid Kerry Championships and Leagues in his playing career. Winning was incidental to Gerry, it was more important to play the game.

He never missed a match for his club from 1955 to 1962 and rarely afterwards unless through injury . On and off the field Gerry was a gentleman and never during his long playing career did he give offence by word or action. His brothers Paddy Joe, Batty, John Joe and Mathie were all playing members of the Glenbeigh team. Batty was a prominent member of  St. Brendan's College and played at centre forward for the Munster College side before emigrating to America.
