"Pistol Road Glen Alum"
Aunt Shury always walked the girls up the holler to school for a few minutes until they joined up with other children. Then she returned home. But for some uneasy feeling ..she decided to pretend to be going home and sneaked around and followed them from where she couldn't be seen. Grinning to herself, nobody was going to mess with her babies! She'd knock their brains out first! No matter who they were! That's for sure!
The front screen door slammed as heavy footstpes walked thru the house with a voice echoing, "Hellooo! It's Me!" Ellen wasn't surprised as Aunt Shury walked in the kitchen. She always came over before Ellen left for the Company Store to work as the bookkeeper, to see Maggie off to school. Aunt Shury was a generous soul of sorts, always kind with Ellen and loved Maggie like something fierce. She claimed to be a 'distant' relative of Maggie's, related to her deceased Father. Ellen mused as she thought about it. "Good Morning Aunt Shury. Would you care for some breakfast?" Aunt Shury shook her head and laughed. "Lord no! I've been up for hours! Almost time for my dinner!" She sat down at the table and asked Maggie; "Are y'all ready for school? Y'all best to git a move on girl! I saw Kathy headin' this way when I come up the porch steps." With that, Maggie finished her meal, gave her Mother a quick kiss and headed for the front door, just as a knocking occurred. "Maggie, you wait till it's time to leave, don't go a moment sooner." Her Mother said as she shook her head at Aunt Shury. Ellen rose and thanked Aunt Shury again.. for being there for them and headed out the door. Thinking about it all, she was very thankful for the dear woman, but wondered why on earth she lived as she did. Well...it really wasn't any of her business. She was very kind to them, but everyone else around here kept their distance from Aunt Shury. Gossip told, 'you' don't mess with that woman! She's likely to take a broom stick or switch to you! Smiling to herself, she wondered what would happen to that mean mean mean boy that teased and tormented Maggie and her friend Kathy, if Aunt Shury got wind of his 'meaness'.
I am...spending too much TIME around that woman! I'm beginning to think like her! Get a hold of yourself Ellen! You are trying to teach your child to be kind! She shook her head as she entered the door of the Glen Alum Company Store.
Back at the house, Aunt Shury cleaned up the breakfast dishes as she listened to the two little girls in the next room. She smiled until she heard fear in Maggie's voice. "I'm sceared of him Kathy! We'll just walk real close with all the rest of the kids to school from now on ok? He won't bother us if we're with them big ole Noe boys!" They both giggled and told Aunt Shury they were ready to leave.
Maggie was quiet as she walked this morning. She thought about the Father she never had a chance to get to know. She was told he was a nice man that loved her Mother very much. He was from up Jacob's Holler. His Mother still lived up there, but Maggie never seen her either. People said she stayed home all the time. When she did venture out, she was seen in that big ole black car speeding past towards Willamson or Charleston. At least that's what Aunt Shury told her .
